I'm impressed if this really is a "Governor's Tag" Buck. The size is not exactly unbelievable, though it is a beautiful deer. What impresses me is that the deer was harvested with a bow, in the fall. Most of the "Governor's Tag" deer I've seen harvested are late winter kills, or ruttin' bucks, when they couldn't care less about some gun sittin 400 yards off with a gun. :)

Congrats to this hunter... I hope this is true!!!

Sweet lookin buck.......he looks awfull hard-horned, polished, and gray from the bucks I saw on the opener on the 5th. Kudos to the hunter, I wonder what unit?

The New Mexico Gov tag buck was killed last week and it wasn't in the rut or late winter. In fact a Kaliforinicated buck was killed by a Gov tag holder a couple of weeks ago. No rut and no winter conditions...just 100 degree heat. The NM buck reportedly gross scores over 250 and has mainbeams to kill for!

I dont want to make yet another negative post, but is this legit? sure looks like some bone has been added.

does anybody know what do you call the camo pattern, and it is any good?...

i'm from MT and we know the guy who guided this buck it is for real it was on private ground in the bitteroot, he also said gross mid 230s

it was reported on bowsite.com that a typ. 196 buck was taken off the same private ground on opening weekend also, along with this 226 buck.

i live 10 minutes from where this buck was shot. 221 is what i was told and trust me its a big buck but anyone with the money could have shot this buck. I know people who used to feed this buck when he was a few years younger. there was also another huge buck shot in another area around here. i will try to post some pics by the end of the day

Im not sure about the non typical. The typical guys is from what i hear. still havent got a score yet

LAST EDITED ON Sep-10-09 AT 05:04PM (MST)[p]thanks for the other pic's, great buck.

Is it possible that they have some whitetail in their DNA? strange looking heads.

I too live CLOSE to where these bucks were taken. These deer were taken with limited draw tags, NOT "governors" tags. I personally know the gentleman that took the heavy typical. These deer were local celebrities around here, and there are more like them still alive. Chris, I'll try to get some numbers on the big typical too. Don't know if I told ya, but Tyler has the tag this year. Give me a call. mtmuley

LAST EDITED ON Sep-12-09 AT 00:35AM (MST)[p]I'm pretty sure the guy that shot the non-typical did in fact have the governors tag, which is why I titled the thread that. I could be wrong though as I don't know the guy personally, just have heard the same from lots of different sources.
Never once heard anyone say the typical was killed with anything less than a drawn permit.

Don't mean to be ignorant, but does Montana even have a "Governors Tag"? They do have what they call "Super Tags" that you can draw, but I haven't heard about them auctioning any Governor's tags. I may be wrong.
OUTSTANDING bucks at any rate!

Yes there is. The sheep tag is the only one You ever really hear about, but they also do it for deer, elk moose and goat. IIRC the deer tag normally goes for 5-8 grand.

I apologize if I was wrong about the "governor" tag. If it was indeed that, I think the guy settled too soon. mtmuley

Considering that it is MT....I think a high 220" buck is a reasonable goal for a GOV tag. I sure cant remember anyone in the past few years that killed anything bigger with that tag. Anyone know if there has been a bigger one since they started the GOV auction tag?

Top ten ever killed in MT with a bow for sure, possibly all the way up at #2. Be hard to punch that tag so early, but definitely would've done the same had it been my tag.
Not a stretch to think that might be the highest grossing buck killed in the state this year.

Yep, I'd shoot it with that tag. Heck for 7-8K it is diffentately worth the money. Didn't the Gov tag go for something like 12-14K a couple of years ago? Seemed to me that there was a pretty serious buck in unit 271 (?) that year. Thanks for the info.
