LAST EDITED ON Sep-22-09 AT 09:22PM (MST)[p]That can be a really good tag that, for the most part, is "under the radar". I know the area well and I know Jason (the operator) really well. He's a pretty easy going guy but he knows his deer. They have taken some real good bucks out of that CWMU over the past few years. They do have some resident deer that are there through the summer and into the fall, but alot of that hunt can really depend on the weather. An early cold/snow can move some real good bucks onto that unit from the neighboring units and CWMUs. That would be the ideal scenario for you. They've taken some that have gone 200" or close to it, and have taken quite a few 175+ bucks. Overall, a good tag with potential for a real bruiser. Be patient, let the weather get the deer moving through, and dont be afraid to pass up a 175" buck. Jason and Jeremy are great guys and know what they're doing so my advice would be to take theirs!!! Good Luck!!!

LAST EDITED ON Sep-23-09 AT 11:17AM (MST)[p]Lucky, have they been able to prevent the rampant trespassing I saw on my hunt? Fences cut, ATV tracks everywhere, it was ridiculous. It does have great potential, but I was limited to hunting the alfalfa fields and upper meadow, no explanation given.

Now let me make this clear before someone jumps down my throat. Jason was not the operator at the time of my hunt. I do not know him nor have met him. I enjoyed my hunt there, and had plenty of chances, just not at what I was looking for.

Oh, and I really did enjoy the folks at the Mt. Carmel Motel. Old place, but well-kept and the owners were great people. You can walk out the back door to hunt, even.

If it rains, watch out, the roads are really nasty. I think I still have mud from there on my quad!

Jason is awesome. I grew up in Orderville. If you can't get hold of him leave a message with his wife and he will call you back. There are some great bucks on the unit. I think their success rate is like 100% also. I agree with the mud problem, but the fields are the best place to hunt the unit. Clay is everywhere so go prepared for that.

Jason is indeed a good egg. I had a tag in 2006. It was a fun hunt, I just wish I had figured out a few things about the unit 3 or 4 days sooner. Jason's dad had a tag the same year I did, so I think we were "steered" away from the best areas. Once the actual land owner told us where we should be hunting, we got into the deer. Ended up killing a 150"ish deer on the last day. But I agree, the potential for a "good" buck is not bad, especially if the weather cooperates.

Legacy,
that's funny you think you were steered away from the good areas because of Jason's dad. He's a meat hunter from the old school and killed a 20" dink with a 5" droptine off the base. I put it on a plaque for him so I know what it is. Probably scores less than 145" gross.

Why would you apply for a CWMU hunt and only hunt a "meat" buck when you drew? Doesn't make a lot of sense to me. If he wanted to kill a "meat" buck, there were plenty of "smaller" bucks that he could have killed. Anyway, the fact that his dad ended up killing a "145"" deer was probably attributed to the weather and conditions more than anything. I guess they just forgot to mention to me where the vast majority of the deer hung out. It took us running into the actual landowner and him telling us where to hunt. In fact he said; "Why aren't you hunting over where thay kill all the deer?" So we talked and figured out where we should be. Hey - SURPRISE! There were the deer! After several days of seeing next to nothing, we were in the middle of hundreds of deer. I don't think us not being told about this "spot" was just coincidence. Don't get me wrong, it turned into a good hunt for us and I like Jason, but this is one of the problems with CWMU's. I learned quite a bit from this experience. I'm not sure you have a much of a right to assess the situation just because you put his antlers a plaque for him. Again, I don't want to talk trash about Jason OR his dad because Jason is a good guy and I'm sure his dad is to, but that doesn't change the way things happended.

Legacy the buck that Jason's dad killed was a freakin dink!!!! He killed it just for the meat!!!! The deer move through that area pretty quick so unless you are lucky enough to find one of the resident bucks which are hard to find then you get to see what is moving through. One day you can see hundreds of deer and the next you will see none and this process repeats over and over!!! I would hunt the unit for sure if I had the chance!!!

I'm not disputing that it was a small buck. I really know nothing about what went on with Jason and his dad during his hunt and I really don't care. Someone asked for information specific to the unit and I provided what I could. I'm not going to sugar-coat it. I understand the unit pretty well, you are not telling me anything new. And guess what? I'd hunt the unit again if I had the chance as well.

Legacy,
Just for your info, Jason's inlaws own the land. (Esplin family)

There are in fact more deer in certain areas than others at various times during the fall. Some areas have bucks moving into them like crazy at times during october and the early part of nov.

Lucky shot pretty much gave the facts about this hunt and unit. It's good for a 170" buck any year, and one or two big ones come out of there each year. I do the taxidermy work on most of the bucks killed there, and have done for 15 years, and most deer are 24-26" 175" bucks. Each year there will be one or maybe two deer that will be over 190" and three times that I know of they have killed 200" bucks in 15 years.

About Jason's dad, just because I mounted his buck on a plaque definitely doesn't clue me in on his hunt. You are right. But the fact that he's my kids grandpa might lend to me knowing quite a bit about the hunt. Especially since the kids were hoping for once grandpa would break the spell and get something decent.

I'm not trying to stir you up, but I probably know a little about the unit, Jason, and the hunt on the unit. Most guys that leave there are pleased with the hunt and the treatment. We seem to see the same guys year after year coming back again with the exception of the Utah resident draw hunters.

Yes Travis, I am well aware of your relationship with Jason and your Taxidermy business in Glendale. And I know you are very familiar with Mt Carmel and the surrounding areas. I just want to reiterate the fact that I think Jason is a good guy and I would indeed hunt the unit again if given the chance. If I was applying for the unit for the first time as a "draw" hunter, I would also want to know ANY experience any past "draw" hunters have had, good or bad. As for the "paying" clients, that's a tough one. Do "paying" clients get better treatment on CWMU's than "draw" hunters? I would say on the majority of CWMU's, the answer would be yes! So I think saying that the "paying" clients come back happy year after year really holds no weight when speaking of "draw" hunters. I have had experience on multiple CWMU's and have had more bad experiences than good. And I'm saying my experience on Mt Carmel was not all that bad, and I believe if I drew that tag again, I could tell Jason when I wanted to hunt and where I wanted to hunt and he would do what he could to accomodate me. I only wish I had known more going into the hunt to begin with, but that's the risk you take.

I thought that Jasons dads buck was cool if I am thinking of the one he got in like 2005 that was a freak and had the nasty droptine.

If you want meat bucks hunt the general, if you want to find a really nice buck get on Jasons good side.

Ok guys thanks for the info
Get on Jason,s good side, Use the taxidermist in Glendale named Travis, find this mike guy and have hem show me where to start and hope for some weather

Legacy,
Looks like a couple of the local guys are teaming up on you.
Also to the guy that started this post. if you have this tag you should do your own homework and not listen to what Jason tells you. I have ran into a couple of these guys out in the field and I can guarantee you if any of them know where there is a big buck they will not be telling you unless you pay. That would be my advice. Do your own homework and not listen to much of what they say. I would even try and get a hold of Legacy and see if he can give you some information. You got to remember that the guy that runs this CWMU may be a nice guy but he is out there making a living and if someone is going to pay him more dinero to get a big buck he will keep you away from that buck. Good Luck.
