3rd season 61 or 4th season 70

I am a Colorado resident and am looking into what to do next year. I should be able to get a 3rd season 61 tag next year or I could wait another year and get the 4th season 70 tag. For those of you who know these areas well, which would you do? What type of buck would I expect on each of these units? Is it possible to get a 180 buck? 190? 200? The numbers say that 61 is the better unit but the 4th season intrigues me. Thanks for the input.

I nearly applied for either one of these hunts this year. I ended up having too much on my plate this year and decide to save my points. I think either unit could produce a big buck. At the same time, I know either unit is not an easy hunt for a slammer.

Don't know enough about either unit to judge, but....Next year is the reset year for dates. The rifle hunts are nearly a week later than this year....So I'd try for the best 3rd season hunt I could draw with my points. They should be rutting from the start.

I would look at the total harvest of bucks between the two units. Unit 70 is much higher; which may not allow a lot of bucks to reach maturity. Secondly, I would look at the over the counter elk hunters, which can create difficulties in hunting bucks. Third, I would check out huntable terrain; private versus public. I would put in for a unit 61 tag if it was me, and plan to arrive a few days before season to scout immediately before the season opener and identify where the other camps are located.

I would go with 61 also. Those 4th season hunts are really cool because there are very few people around and the bucks are chasing does, BUT, 61 is the better unit of the two. AND, the 3rd season will be late next year AND because 61 is limited elk, there won't be ten thousand dudes running around.

yea I kindof agree with Brian. 61 is not as good as some think, but still holds some giant deer. 70 will blow you away as to how many deer you will see.
