My father and I have have 15 NR points and I was hoping for a few ideas on what units and hunts you guys think would be best. We are archery hunters and will be hunting with our archery tackle but if a 3rd or 4th season tag in a paticular unit ups are chances at killing some nice bucks, we would consider chasing rutting bucks with our bows during a rifle season. Thanks in advance

Please make sure you have a rifle in the pickup just for my sake!! I would hate for you to burn 15 points have 200 class dear running about 80+ yrds around you and all you have is a bow. Just a warning horrible nightmares for a few years after:) Someone will give you some good advice, sorry I cant help you out. Good luck!

A good indication is to look at the draw odds on this site and see what it's taking to draw each unit. As a rule, the more points it takes, the better the unit is supposed to be. Of course there are other factors, like weather, droughts, etc...but that's a good place to start.

If I had 15 points, I'd consider the 4th season in one of the premier units. Especially next year with the way the seasons are going to fall.

Good luck,

WH

Thanks for the advice, but I think the buck would be plenty safe at 80 yards even if I did take a rifle!!! Will only have our bows!

LOL You have better nerves than I do:)!! Good luck!

That's a lot of deer points! Could have had quite a few archery hunts in any unit in 16 years. Guess point banking is out now, so....I'd just pick one of the couple of hunts (61 4th, 21 3rd) that takes something close to your points (RFW out as a nonresident) and go with it. At least you would not be hunting something that you have ten extra points for...

I have 15 CO deer points and I am still not sure there is a unit in Colorado worth a 15 year wait. Gun or bow? I have taken the "wait till they grow up again" stance. Am I wrong?

I know we are sitting on alot of points and we should have used them years ago but life and other hunts got in the way. My father is turning 70 this year so this will be out last great deer hunt together. He still is in great shape and can out hike alot of guys! (Probably me included). Thanks for all the advice, keep it coming!!! My father also loves to take photos so I can promise you guys some great photos of our hunt!!

Check this link out, it shows exactly what points it takes for every hunt there is and for every species in Colorado. As for your hunt, like you already know, there are no bow hunts that take 15 points but if I were you I'd get a 4th season tag for one of the best units in Colorado ( 10,21,61,66,54) The deer will be rutting heavily and it should be a great archery hunt. And with low tag numbers there wont be alot of people around to spoil your hunt.

Just dont burn all those points up on a tag that takes less than 12 points because it ruins the draw odds for the rest of us the next year. Good luck! http://wildlife.state.co.us/Hunting/BigGame/Statistics/
