It was the last day of the 09 blackpowder hunt and ive been hunting hard for this bruiser of a buck, and the on the last day i had my fourth encounter with him, i watched where the bruiser buck headed for his afternoon nap, and told myslef "its time to be a agressive, i have got to go in after him" of course like any big muley he layed down in the thickest nastiest chit on the mountian, so im creeping my way in to his home and its dry, and steep, the conditions were not on my side but i kept pushing inn, as i knew i was getting close the wind decided it was time to do a liitle swirl and hit me in the back for 2 secounds just enough time to blow the deer out, is all i see is azz and antlers bustin the brush.
Now let me set the terrian for you, i was hunting a south slope, thick with scrub oak, amber oak, and patches of maple trees, down below me is a little bench with a meadow about 60 yards wide and 150 yards long i was trying to stay within in range of that bench, because with a one of my other encounters, when i jump the buck the first time he used that bench as an escape route.
So, back to the story, azz and antlers bustin brush and he was headed for the bench he crossed the bench and was trotting up the oppesite side on the edge of the clearing, i thought to myself {man! he's a little out of range, but its now or never}
with one swift motion i swung the gun around and as soon as my sight hit the top of he's shoulders i let it loose, the deer does a front flip kinda summersalt style and never moved, holy chit was i the happy's guy on earth right now i was yelling at the top of my lungs, "I GOT'EM I FINALLY GOT'EM WHOOOHOOO" just then i hear this what sounds like shell rock slideing againts each other and i look to see and there on the sky line is the buck i thought i just shot, looking right at me, i even think he stuck his tounge out at me, as to say ha ha,
At that time i felt sick to stomach, i thought {after all the effort i put into this hunt, i shoot the wrong deer} i about sat down right there and cried i wanted that deer so bad i could taste it, so as im gathering my emotions, i glass the deer i just shot, hes laying down in the clearing and i could still see his antler stickin up above the brush, i thought well maybe his an ok deer. so i made my way down to him and this is what i saw.
So after all said and done hes a nice buck, it was a fun hunt and i had good company, and maybe next year i'll it all over again, hopefully with a litte bit different outcome.
