Well this was my Daughter, Nadine's first deer hunt. We been to the range and she was all zero'd in. I was doing great until the day of the hunt, worring that we didn't get enough range time in and how she would handle a pressured situiation as her ol' man tends to over react sometime...ha ha.
Well once we all got unpacked and geared up we were out the door half hour before sunrise. Took us a while to get from Mesa to my Fathers place in Fort Defiance, Az. A little longer than expected. But she was excited and couldn't wait to get out in the woods. Took us half hour to get to our hunting area and we started glassing. Just as expected we jumped 6 bucks. All were small and young bucks, except for one buck. He was a shooter and she took aim and......missed. Oh no, I thought. The bucks ran and we went over to see if there was any blood. I knew it was a clean miss because I saw the bullet hit dirt at the bucks feet.
I talked with her only the way a father talks to their daughters after they miss a nice buck, lol. She still seem very calm and she assured me she wouldn't miss again.
We then circled the small ridge where we jumped the bucks hoping maybe they might have just ran to the top and settled there. Once we got to the top of the ridge all we found were a couple does. No bucks. On a feeling that I had, we went back down to the area where we jumped them bucks. I knew that that ridge was where they crossed over to their bedding area and that there had to be another buck coming thru there soon.
Sure Enough, this buck decide to poke his head out from behind the trees. Nadine wasted no time in taking aim as the buck began to walk away my oldest son whistled and the buck stopped and next thing I know Nadine took her shot! One shot, one kill! She quickly recycled another round into the chamber. I knew she had hit him because of the way he jumped into the air. he didn't go 20 yards. It was an amazing shot! 85 yards, into the sunlight, using a 7mm mag. She loves that cannon! She really showed her brothers up. Both her older and younger brother, Steven and Ryan, were along for the hunt. It was a very successful weekend! My brother also had his son out for the youth hunt he got his kill later that day.
So here are a few pictures of the weekend we had.
Enjoy everyone!

Very cool! Everything about this story is awesome, congrats to your little girl. Now she knows what to do to the boys when they start coming around.

I saw an episode of Bone Collectors earlier this year about the Navajo Youth Hunt. What a great concept! Congrats to you and your family for keeping the hunting heritage alive!

Excellent!! Awesome to see the next generation taking up the love of the outdoors. Thank you for taking the time, and patience, to introduce your kids to hunting. Congrats to your son and daughter.

Hey yeah I saw that episode too! That was pretty neat. My cousin was on that youth hunt a few years ago. They take the kids who don't have anyone to take them out and show them the way of the woods. Its really awesome. My cousin's father (my uncle)had cancer and wasn't able to take him out. so he applied for this hunt and was accepted. Shot a nice buck too.
Anyway thanks for all the kool comments, kids had a blast. My daughter has a management hunt coming up in November. That'll be interesting to as it will be taking place in a trophy unit. She's pretty stoked to say the least. I'm sure she'll do fine.
Happy hunting to all and good luck!

Mike
