She drew the tag early this spring and the screaming started! After ten years of waiting, the tag was finally in hand. We scouted and hiked and shot and scouted. Many, many days were spent looking here and there for bucks. What a great summer we had! My wife had taken two small bucks in her career and wanted to take a mature buck with good mass. If he had an extra that would just be gravy! Well, opening morning came last Saturday. Sunrise on the desert is a swell sight!
We covered three rugged canyons on foot opening morning. Lots and lots of bucks but nothing we had to shoot. We passed 34 bucks including a heavy, wide three point who didnt see us until he was 25 yards away and a 22 inch framed 7 by 7 with kickers and stickers but zero mass and milk on his nose. When and if he grows up he'll be a whopper. We went out that evening with the kids to glass the high tops from the 4 wheeler. Even the boy got behind the glass. Can't get them started too young!
Right at dark we spotted "THE BUCK". He was high and fairly heavy and an old bruiser. He just had the look Angie wanted. But he was in an impossible spot to make a move. So we left him till Sunday morning. We arrived in the canyon before light and he was simply gone! We found some of his buddies but he had disappeared. Finally at almost 9:30 here he came trotting across the basin. He'd fed into a different canyon but came back to bed. And he bedded higher and in a spot to make a stalk. So we went down the canyon and up another fork and circled the peak. My darlin' as we gained 1100 feet of elevation to put a move on a buck.
Fall on the desert while hunting or guiding is a wonderful thing for the soul!
Our goal is the rocky peak on the left. The ol' buck knew where to bed to live a long life.
We finally got on top and knew we were in his bedroom. We snuck down through a saddle and started picking apart every twig and rock. The dang wind started to swirl and i saw an ear flip! I got Angie ready and got my bino's on the bedded buck only 40 yards in front. Then his head came around. I knew he was fixing to blow out but she couldn't see him behind a service berry bush. She tried to step left but he'd had enough and exploded down the mountain. I told her to take him! She touched the ol' .270 off on his 4th bounce and nailed him right through the neck!!!! Face plant!!!! Then we started to scream some more and hug and dance and cry and scream! Here he is as he lay!
Her worst fear was a shot at a running buck! She's conquered that fear in fine fashion! He's a brute of a bodied buck. From his teeth he's atleast 6 and maybe 7! A shade under 25 wide but exactly that tall.
She's was in shock by how it went down! I couldn't be prouder of her!!!
There may be bigger bucks on Vernon (I've seen them) but this one is just perfect! Score doesn't matter when ya smile like that!
Sweethearts with a sweet buck!
Her Dad watched the whole show through the spotting scope. He we are bringing him down out of the nose-bleed seats! She earned every inch of her deer!
A proud papa and an amazing huntress with a true trophy.
Back at camp, the kids started in where we left off on the screaming! This is why I hunt! I've guided guys and hunted in mutiple states and i've never had one ounce more fun that this hunt! You won't see us in the "book" and we'll never regret the hunt of a lifetime. Enjoy yourselves boys! Hunt hard and smile every second!
