Hey all,
Just wanted to put up a post in my frustration in the middle of the rifle hunt. I've been hiking my a** off for the past few days into the areas i've known to be good for some big deer, in addition to some more easily acessible areas where there should always be at least something to shoot. (This has mainly been up in areas through Diamond Fork) I've barely even heard any shots in the distance. I haven't seen a single buck. Lots of does, just no bucks. Has anyone been experiencing the same? I should also mention it's my first muley hunt. I've done plenty of preparation though. Any info could help. PM me if necessary. Thanks for any help or shared frustration.

I think you might be discovering something a lot of new hunters learn. Deer are not stupid and as soon as the shooting starts, animals that were easily visible before suddenly disappear. In a few weeks they will again be out in the open and easy to find.

In areas where they are hunted, even does quickly learn that they need to avoid human contact.

The deer are usually still in the area, but they are masters at hiding in the thickest brush available. You might have to go in after them.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-22-09 AT 12:05PM (MST)[p]It's not just the new huters. I've found the same thing. No bucks. I've spent more time in the last two months looking for bucks than I have in the last two years. I've never been so frustrated in my hunting life as this year. I can't even turn up a baby buck. There must have been a major winter kill or aleins or Obama effect or something...I can't find deer in any of the 'old' areas. It's pretty bad boys. I'll give it my all this weekend...good luck to everyone.

I am seeing the same in that area as well. plenty of bucks earlier but not now. They are not stupid. They sure know how to hide in that thick stuff!!! Might have to get someone willing to do a push for ya through that thick stuff. Be ready to make a quick decision and shot only if you are comfortable with a moving target. Good Luck!

I just got back from the diamond fork/hobble creek area...We say 47 deer throughout the day and not one of those had horns. We hiked, we pushed, we even drove the roads (saw most of the 47 from the road :)) It has been a tough hunt in the central unit for me and my wife...I don't really care if I get one but I sure would like my wife to get one - it would be her first.

I am not sure if I will go out again since I have already been in the hills every day since the opener and frustration is really setting in. We counted up today that in 6 days we have seen about 125 deer and not one was a buck - we have seen a healthy fawn crop though!! :-( Oh well, it has been fun spending time with the family I guess.
