Deer points buring a hole in my pocket

Ok guys, I am looking for some advice. I will be going into the 2010 Utah application period with 10 deer points and I would like to use them up and get back in the hunt for elk. I would prefer a rifle hunt but if I had to, I would take an archery hunt.

What unit would you apply for? I see several CWMUs that give me good odds not to mention other LE units. Here are a list of areas that are tempting but I would like your advice or past experiences with thse units or any other units that I should be looking at...

Book cliffs
San Juan Elk Ridge
Deseret - CWMU
Two Bear - CWMU
Paunsaugunt

What other units should I be concidering? I have hunted Two Bear way back before it was a CWMU, back when United Sportsman ran it. I love that area and know it holds good bucks but I am cautious in that I keep hearing negative reviews on how "non-paying customers" get treated compared to "paying customers" on CWMUs.

What are your thoughts??

Thanks,
Jeremy

You'd be hard pressed to draw deseret and two bear with 10 points, however hell canyon cwmu is a dang good one and is adjacent to deseret.
PM me for details, i am familiar with all three.

I must have miss read the draw odds on MM then. No worries.

I sent you a PM.

Thanks!

4 out of 4 people drew Deseret this year with 10 points, and 8 out of 16 drew with 9 points. I'd say your odds are pretty good.

Book cliffs would be pretty much guaranteed. Not many real big ones down there unless you're willing to get away from the roads and hike.

Fillmore Oak Creek is one of the better units as far as genetics go, but again, you'll have to spend some time glassing to find a monster.

San Juan would be worth looking at as well.

How are the Lost Creek and Chalk Creek deer herds doing since the bad winter in 2007?

I hunted the Paus. muzzleloader a few years ago had a great time. Did not see the monster bucks but saw quite a few 24 to 28 inch 4pts and lots of big 3pts. I have heard lots of good about the bookcliffs. I would probably blow them there. It's as good as any. If you do put in for San Juan I would find a guide. BlackTimberOutfitters would be my first choice.

I stand corrected, 10 points are putting you right in there.
That must mean my 13 should get me closer to the end of MY rainbow!! ;-)

Hehe, yeah I've been keeping an eye on that hunt, along with a few others. I've got 8 points this year, so it wouldn't be too far off for me. With 13 you must be holding out for the Henrys or Ensign. Best of luck, I have about as much chance at one of those hunts as I do of finding the end of a real rainbow :7
