while hunting southern utah muzzy I shot a deer, after looking for it for two days we could not find it. Went back the following weekend looking for it and still nothing. Went down over the rifle season with friends and one of them with a tag found it, we walked within 10 ft of it. Doing the right thing I thought... I called the fish and game to tell them what had happened because it was after the 7 day retreive time. I told them I wanted to tag it and get it out, but they told me it was there property and to keep hunting. I even gave them GPS cuw. It is in a very remote place. called the fish and game oct 29th and they told me they are going to try and retreive it in the next couple of weeks...there will be way to much snow in the next couple of weeks, makes me wonder if they will even look for it. Anyways I consider my tag filled...BY the way I am a dedicated hunter....WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

Congrats on sticking with it and finding your buck. Better let them get it now. No sense getting yourself in trouble over a lost deer.

well post em!!!

Meat is no good
Too late to put it on the wall
Might as well share your pictures.

Keep your tag. You did all you could to recover/find it. Post up some pictures.

<------<< I love it when the plan comes together.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-30-09 AT 03:51PM (MST)[p]Well it appears that you did all in your power to uphold the highest standard of ethics. Too bad you couldn't find him sooner, it sounds like that really disappointed you. But the DWR told you to keep hunting - so I would have no further qualms about it whatsoever. You got the pics of that buck, if you leave him lay he remains property of the DWR and you undo all the ethics you have tried so hard to maintain. Post up the pics and enjoy the experience. If you get a chance to harvest a bigger one - you are well within your rights (and most likely within the judgement of the MM ethics police as well) to do so. If you only get a chance to take a smaller buck for the meat, then enjoy the venison.

well I guess next year you can pick him up as a winterkill if they don't pick him up first.

"I have found if you go the extra mile it's Never crowded".

Not in Utah you can't. It's illegal to pick up antlers attached to a skull. Too many poaching SOB's were shooting them and marking the position with a GPS and returning later claiming they were winter/lion kills.

I think most guys that have taken very many bucks have lost one or will sometime in their hunting career. It's right up there with the things that i dread the most and look least forward to. Sounds like you did a admirable job of trying to recover your animal and took it further by contacting the proper authorities about the situation.

As far as what i'd do? Everything possible, within the law, to get that trophy in my possesion. This might not be possible depending on your location to the animal but maybe getting ahold of the "right guy" or sympathetic Game Officer might help. Here's wishing you Good Luck!!

Although it seems counter intuitive for the Utah Game and Fish to tell you to just go shoot another deer, you have to follow the law and leave the head for now. I mean afterall, we all know Utah's deer herd is thriving (sarcasm) and won't be harmed if you kill two bucks on the same tag. I wish you luck with trying to legally retrieve the antlers. This could happen to any of us.

It seems to me that if the season is open, you ought to be able to hang your tag on any legal buck you find. But I guess that's just me.
