Archery is a year round commitment!!

I usually work at that skinning shop up there and there have been a couple studs brought in this year. Thats a nice buck

Hey Bldrbuck just wondering how many bonus points you had when you drew this tag? Trying to plan my next falls hunting trips and just trying to see if I would even be in the running to draw next year. Great buck, love the mass Congrats!!!

Hey Bldrbuck, tell us about the hunt! Did you see a lot of bucks, many hunters? How you find a buck like that? Thanks.

I grew up hunting 21, wish I had bucks like that when I was a kid!

Hunted unit 21 this past Saturday and Sunday. The tag took 11 points for me to draw as a resident (some drew with 10)--non res was some where around 16 points for third season. The snow came in earlier last week and helped to move some deer around. There are, however, literally hundreds and hundreds of deer you will see each and every day. I probably saw 20 to 30 bucks in one day alone with 4 of them being really nice bucks. 2 bucks were bigger than the one I ended up killing, but i just couldn't get a shot off on them. There are many above average bucks in this unit and a whole lot of access due to the oil and gas drillings around the Rangely area. We would drive around to locate bucks and then game plan them to get a shot. Found this buck the second morning and although i wanted to hold out for a true monster, i just couldn't pass this buck up. He is a 5X6 (one little cheater point) with really good mass all around. Got up above him and put a bullet through the lungs out of my good buddies 7mm ultra mag--lights out!!! There really is no way to describe this hunt unless you actually get to go on it--tons of deer and very littly pressure from deer hunters. You do share the area with elk hunters, however, there are not a ton of them out there (elk or hunters).

As a n.r. waiting 16 years I would hope to see a lot of deer in this class. IMO 21 has slipped some the past few years. But that is a nice buck boulder!

If you were selective and were willing to eat your tag, i can confidently say you would see a lot of bucks in this class. If we have a mild winter for a couple of years, i'll be absolutely scary as to the quality of big bucks you see there in the next few years. There are a lot of nice 2-4 year old deer running around would good genetics. They'll be great deer baring a real bad winter. Thanks for looking!

Hey boulder, sweet buck! I hunted 30 last yr same season but had a tough time finding good bucks. Were they starting to rut last weekend?

the big boys definetely had thier noses working any does around them--so yes, they had started but just barely.

I've got pictures of that buck....

It was a pleasure to meet you Sunday mornin'. :)

Another one went down just up the road later Sunday, and another above yours on Tuesday. Both good solid bucks.

That is a great buck. I love the mass and the dark chocolate antlers. Did you see many elk in 21? I am thinking about hunting first season next year. Again congrats on a dandy of a buck.

BIG CONGRATS !!! I hunted unit 21 two weeks ago 2nd season and had the same experiance. It is a top area.We saw lots of bucks each day and had a great time too. The sad part is , I doubt I ever make it back with the non resident point creep. At age 50 I don't think I will even try again. It is a super hunt , but is it worth waiting 10 - 15 - or 20 years ??? That is a very long time , so for me it was once in a lifetime.. I didn't get a monster , but I did see a couple and couldn't get them down.. Here's what I shot 2 weeks ago.

Hey longshot what would be your opinion on a guy going into the draw as a non-res with 13 points would it be worth waiting to draw a 3rd season tag or do you think a guy could have a comparable hunt on the second season? With the point creep I'm beginning to wonder if I will ever catch a 3rd season tag in 21

Great buck, I hunted there 2 years ago and had a great time. We hunted 3rd season and had no weather to push them down and still saw tons of deer. I think 2nd season would also be a good hunt if you didn't want to wait for 3rd seanson and you would draw it 3-4 years earlier.

Personally , I would go ahead to do second season. The only drawback is hotter weather and no rut activity.. We had alot of hot weather the first three days , but still was able to find alot of bucks early and late evenings. You might as well take a nap in the middle of the day though if its hot/sunny.

There is no question 3rd season will make the monsters more available in the open country , but if you have some hunting experiance and patients , you can make the 2nd season work just as good for you. Alot of guys have had bad experiances with 2nd season , but it nearly always boils down to lack of patients and lack of experiance IMO.

I would not even hesitate to back there 2nd season , but I know others on here have a diferant opinion of it. Good luck.

Finally got around to scoring him and he grosses right at 171 3/8. I'm very happy with that!
