I am trying to do my daughters buck from this year. What is the best way to mount the scull to the board ?
How did you get the scull so nice and white ? Did you use a whitening kit or do it yourself ?
Looks like you figured it out they look great !
Thanks John

Go to www.vandykestaxidermy.com, they have a complete european mounting kit for ~ $54.99. Comes with all the stuff you need, sodium carbonate for boiling the meat off, hydrogen peroxide that you mix with magnesium carbonate to paste on the skull which turns it pearly white, and a nice oak panel you can put your head on after your done. I have never done one by myself until I bought this kit. It's very easy with step by step directions and only takes about 1-2 hrs to boil (depends how much meat you strip prior to boiling) and about 24hrs for the hydrogen peroxide/magnesium carbonate paste to bleach your skull white. Hope this helps.

I forgot to add if you don't want the oak panel to put your skull on, the supplies for boiling and whitening are very cheap. I think 10lbs of sodium carbonate (boiling) runs about $15 which is good for about 8-12 heads, magnesium carbonate (bleaching) 10lbs about $20 which is good for about 15 heads, and the hydrogen peroxide you can buy from the local drug store (make sure it's 3% that you mix with the magnesium carbonate and when you mix it together make sure it has the consistency of mayonnaise)

We have an old pot that we fill with water and put on the camp chef stove to boil the head for a few hours to get the meat off. then I go down to the local hair salon and get a couple bags of powder bleach and a some cream developer. (A friend that told me this method said to get the developer stuff that said 40 on it. Guessing that is the strength of it or whatever.) So I mix up the bleach and cover the scull being carefull not to get any on the horns. I taped them off with masking tape just to be extra careful. I let it sit overnight and then rinse with warm water. both of these skulls I did this process twice. The board is kind of a last min throw together. I had some scrape particle board and made up a simple pattern and stained it. To mount to the board I use 2 wood screws. I drill a pilot hole first and then put the screws in and tighten by hand. If I remember tonight i will take a pic of how I mounted mine. Hope this helps. There might be better ways but this is how I did it.
