1000 Lakes vs. Vernon

Looking for some help/opinions. I have a good chance of drawing 1000 Lakes archery and a fair chance of drawing Vernon archery, this coming year (according to the odds on here). I really want to get back into the elk pool now that I am out of the waiting period so.... my question is: What would you do in my spot? I am willing to wait a few years for a sure thing on the Vernon but is it really worth it? Thanks in advance, CNE

Which area can you scout more. I had the Vernon and I loved it. Some people hated it this year. But I could scout it two to three times a week because I lived so close. That is why I put in for it. Yes I could have drawn some other areas but I would have not been able to spend the time like I did. My advice is what area can you spend more time in and put in for that area.

If you are a local to the Vernon area and can spend alot of time preseason scouting maybe consider Vernon. I had the Vernon rifle tag this year and was not very successful. I got a 3x3 21inch wide 25 1/2 high. 5 3/4 inch bases. I was there 9 days and didn't see very good bucks. We saw 50-100 deer per day. Usely a 3x3 was the best buck of the day. I have got alot of crap saying that the Vernon is only one step above a general season tag. That's how I feel. I don't konw any thing about 1000 lakes, sorry. I was told that the archery hunters do best hunting on top of sheeprock mtns. early. Research this information.Best of luck to you!!! Spend your points wisely!!!

The main requirement for Vernon is 1. Do you own a 4 wheeler
2. Do you like to road hunt

If you like those two then go for it, because there isn't a place you can go hunt without running into one of those requirements. I would pick 1000 lakes..

Ruger67 hit the nail right on the head about all the road access.

If you want to see 50 to 100 deer a day, I would not pick 1000 lake. I'm not real sure there are 100 on the 1000 lake unit. Just a thought, how many Vernon bucks did you see posted on MM as compared to 1000 bucks? Most of the decent buck killed on the 1000 lake are killed by the local land owners on general tags.

I have hunted 1000 Lakes several years, back when it was an open hunt, with a Wayne County friend and have spent some time on 1000 Lake during the summer these last years. There are a few big ones there, but very few. With a little predator control, it could be a good unit again. My advice to you is to save your points from this unit.

Archery hunting big bucks on 1000 lakes I think would be easier than vernon. Ive spent more time on 1000 lakes than than vernon and seen great bucks on both. vernon holds many more deer, with many more roads and a larger hunting area(area the deer actually live). If it was me I'd go 1000 lakes because archery hunting big deer is not easy and I feel my best luck would be there, but I also know it better. good luck!

all the people who didnt have good luck on the vernon must of not glassed it like we did we had a few big bucks found and killed to of them one went 195 5x4 the other was 33 wide 4x6 just under 190
