Has anyone herd what happen with the Vernon poachers just wondering if anyone has any news

They really hurt the Vernon hunt. The DWR is going to have to do some work to get this hunt back to potential.

Speeking of poaching I have heard some crap going on down around Beaver over the last couple of years and the word is that the local authority will not present evidence to division because of political reasons. I know of 4 instances 1 was a "33 inch plus buck kill north of beaver a couple miles by maynderfield, 2 was some minersville kids killing several trophy bucks on the bald hills between beaver and minersville, 3 was 7 bucks killed in the shawnee hills west of milford, and 4 was this fall a local kid in beaver killed 2 archery bucks, one was 190+ and tagged both in the taxi shop with a older tag....Don't have any real proof, just what I heard was going on down south....any one confirm or deny, or is this just Crappy gossip....

I dont think it hurt the unit all that bad. Although every poaching incident hurts a unit, just not in the way you are thinking. I seen all of the bucks that they poached and only a few of them were good bucks. the rest of them were average bucks. I dont even know why someone would risk what they did to poach what they did. There are plenty of very good bucks, way better than the ones they poached on this unit that are still out there today. I killed a pretty good one this year and I know of at least 4 others that were bigger that are still out there today! Like i said earlier, all poaching hurts, but its not like it had devistated the hurd numbers or the ammount of big bucks on the unit.

i had a buddy hunt vernon this year and done pretty good but you said "they only killed a couple good ones" ive seen the pics 2 and all the ones that were avarege bucks would have been above avarage bucks this year and maybe you could have killed one of those i think it does matter the 20 something bucks that were poched could have done the unit good because they didnt get to breed and didnt get to mature as a draw unit is ment for imo it really did hurt the unit

believe me the ones that they killed were not that good for this unit. there were like two bucks that were good. one of them being like 31 inches i beleive. I did kill a great buck this year, 32 inches wide typical 4 point..... and there are others out there still that are bigger than mine.

the king pin of the whole thing killed a 190 4x4 legally and sold an old tag from a previous year to a friend which he didnt see until he harvested his deer which was a 175 3x4. another one of his friend tagged a small two point until he saw another giant 3x4. he killed it and it went 190. then they poached an elk up beaver mountain. all the deer were killed in beaver. thats all i know from a 100% reliable source

back on topic we know the deer heard didnt get hurt out there.

What happened to to tools that poached?

Does anyone know if you call the dwr will they tell you if they have been convicted I have looked on juab court records nothing there or utah county courts as well,Ive looked on the dwr web site you would think if something had been done we would see it there ,

If you know names you can check with the Court and get the information. I know there were more than one case and more than one group of poachers. In one of the cases they received fines, probation, loss of hunting priv etc. For those that say that it did not hurt the unit you are wrong. Of course at first glance they did not take that many big bucks but the potential of those ever getting big are gone. Yes there are still some nice bucks in Vernon but the ones they took illegally will never grow big, never reproduce and will never be available for a legal hunter to harvest. My son in law also had a tag there this year and harvested a nice buck but having hunted there off an on for over 25 years I can tell you it was harder this year than years in the past. If I were in the running it would not stop me from putting in on the unit but plan to hunt a little harder than in years past. Good luck to all.

A guy I work with lives close to one of the poachers from Lehi. I will ask next time I see him. Hope he doesn't tell me "he's livin life as usual". I Hope he never hunts again!
On another note they must not have hurt the overall unit too bad, the DWR just suggested more tags for Vernon. My wife will have 6 points going into next years draw How many points does it take to draw a rifle tag?
Post up some Vernon pics if you got em!

I seen that as well they raised tags my aunt drew with 9 last year I think last year it was 9 to be 100 percent draw I think this year its 10, My boy put in with 6 on archery he has a good chance good luck

I hunted the' Vernon hard last year with some of the best guides that grew up and live on the unit. The unit has a few
very few great deer on it. There are a lot of does and young deer that need to grow up . I am confused by the actions of the DWR when it comes to managing there deer herds. They need to limit the harvesting of bucks on the unit for a few years and it would be a phenominal hunt....

From what i heard twice as many deer were killed than reported !!

How was your success on the vernon with the guides that know that area so well. I have posted pics of the deer I shot earlier this year and will try to post up some pics here too.

I spoke with a guy that lives by one of the poachers. He said the guy did 2 months in jail, has an unknown fine amount, and lost his hunting priveledges.
After looking at what the board has approved for tag #'s on the Vernon I wish they would have upped the primitive weapons more and a little less rifle. I believe they could get the harvest they are looking for and move more people through the bonus point system a little faster with a different approach.
Take a look at what they have done to the Wasatch elk this year. I hope this proves the theory after a few years and becomes the model for all limited units.
Just my 2 cents!
