I have 10 NP preference points and think it is about time to use them. Any ideas where I can draw and have a good chance at a decent buck.

You are in an interesting situation with the amount of points you have. You have enough points to draw a ton of hunts, some 2nd season hunts in good areas, but not enough for some of the better 3rd and 4th season hunts. You also are near drawing some of the better high country hunts. Are you looking to hunt rifle? Low or high country?

I need to know what your looking for before answering, What do you want to hunt with, Guided or Unguided, what terrain are you used to hunting or good at hunting, early or late and what are your expectations, and are you going to be able to scoutt during the summer, There are alot of areas that produce good deer with 10 NR PTS but to be successful answer these questions first then see what everyone thinks. Good luck I wish I was sitting with 10 res pts.

Depending on what you would like to do. You could draw some good 3rd and 4th season or some early high country rifle hunts. Units 53-63 4th, 66 3rd, 67 3rd, 43 early rifle. All of those hunts you could draw and have a chance at a decent buck. You could easily draw some muzzle tags but you would waist alot of your points.

Hate to hijack this thread but maybe some of you guys answering this can give me some ideas. I know exactly what I want..... I have 11 NR points and I'm only interested in archery. I would like to see deer in the 150-170 inch range. The more plentiful the better! Spot and stalk. High country or high desert doesn't matter. Backpack or truck camp doesn't matter. I just want to burn my points where I'll have a fun hunt. I hunted Books cliffs a number of years ago on my only other mule deer hunt and it was fun!
Thanks in advance.

I know this aint what you want to hear but you can draw some of the best archery deer tags in CO with 0-4 points. I'm not sure there is a unit in CO worth 11 points for an archery tag.In fact, I'm not sure there is a unit in CO that requires 11 points to draw an archery tag. I sure wish I had your problem though. If I were you, I'd strongly consider picking up a rifle with that many points. Good luck.

Please for the love of God burn 11 points up on a tag that takes 11 points not on an archery tag that only takes 4 or 5 if that. It ruins the draw odds for the rest of us in the comming years. Do some research find a late season tag (4th season) and have a chance at a 190"+ deer. And if your set on using your bow, use it! There wont be too many people out there with you and the deer will be rutting. What better time to chase them with a bow.

Don't want to ruin anybodies future draw odds?
How does that happen?
Because I jump in with my points and draw 1 tag?
My passion is archery and I have been busy accomplishing my elk goals and with those secured I'm turning my attention to Mule Deer.
I'm familiar with the draw odds table and see units like 21 and 61 are the most popular 4-6 points. I'm curious about 201 since it takes a lot of points with only 1 NR archery tag and not as much OTC elk tags or numerous draw tags.Anybody know anything about 201 ?
It sounds like 61 is stalking the popple stands.
Units 54 and 55 are high country spot and stalk hunts but still recovering from winterkill. I definitely want to burn my points so I can get on a unit to hunt more consistently in the future.
Thanks,
Dave

I would wait until CO re-states the preference point banking and draw several two or three point units over multiple years. I'm a resident and that is my plan, since I'm out-of-state working the majority of hunting season.

GBTG,
Unit 10 or 201 would be my choice. I'll have 6 this year and will be cashing in on 61, but if I had a bit more I'd definitely be holding out for one of those two units.

The CO DOW manages the NW corner of the state for trophy hunting - units 10, 21, and 201. Here's what it took nonresidents to draw an archery buck tag this season:

Unit 10 - 10-11 points
Unit 21 - 4-5 points
Unit 201 - 2-3 points

All 3 of these units would give you a chance at a descent buck; however, they are much better hunts during Nov, due to migration and the rut. According to the statistics, unit 10 would be the obvious choice.

I wish I was in your shoes. Good luck on whatever you choose.

I wouldn't waste your time or points with unit 10. there are not near as many good bucks there as there used to be and it takes way too many to draw for the hunt you get
