We are making a new Hunting Rifle and would like to get everyone's opinion on what their 4 favorite calibers are. Our rifle has a quick caliber conversion option so we would really like to know all FOUR of your favorites and not just one. Here is a list of some of the calibers we are considering, however if you would like to suggest any others please do. Also any recommendations on barrel lengths would be appreciated.

300 RUM
338 LM
300 WSM
300 WIN 24" or 26" barrel
375 HH
375 RUM
270 WSM

Thanks for your help!

300 win mag
dont need anything else. Well a 22-250 for coyotes.

I assume that you are only talking centerfire cartridge rifles? If not, a 50 cal blackpowder would be on my list.

However if I had to choose 4 centerfire cartridge rifles they would be:

243
270
7mm rem mag
338 win mag.

Oh wait a minute, I already own those. lol

venor, ergo sum (I hunt, therefore I am)

After a lifetime of hunting and reloading my favorites are:

280 Remington or AI
25/06 Remington or AI
300 Weatherby
270 Weatherby

I am not a fan of the new short cartridges...tried them but can't achieve the accuracy I demand!

But it is really hard to keep the list at just four!!

TM

.22 LR
6mm Remington
.30-30 Winchester
.300 Win. Mag.
12 gauge pump shotgun

If it lives in North America and bleeds, I can kill it.

Eel

Know guns, know peace, know safety. No guns, no peace, no safety.

338 ultra shortend 3/16 to fit guger m77
same 3/16 shortend 338 ultra necked to 7mm
257 stw

257 weatherby

If I was a young hunter looking for an all around hunting gun.....it would be a 30-06. Been around for a 100 years and still going strong..

I prefer the classic calibers, nothing wrong with the modern calibers. mine favorites are

.280 rem
7mm win mag
.264
.270

Limited to just four? wow, thats tough. here goes mine. 300 Weatherby 300 Win. mag, 25/06, and for heavy timber, 348 Win.

Nobody mentioned the 7WSM.
It's a favorite of mine.

Fixing to build a 264 WSM soon with high end components so that may become a next favorite.

7mm Rem mag for elk, moose, other large game
.243 win for deer and speed goats
.223 rem for yotes
17 hmr for bunnies & whistle pigs

Nocked N Loaded

What's the diameter of the bolt face for cartridge compatibility? Action length? What rifle are you talking about? Intended game and terrain?

I'm with several otehr on here. In order of priority:

1. 300 Win mag
2. 22-250
3. 270 Winchester
4. 6mm Remington

All I really use any more is the top 2. I use the 300 mag for all big game and the 22-250 for coyotes and prairie dogs when I'm not useing the 17 HMR or a 22 rimfire. The 270 is still a great caliber and the 6mm makes a great one for the wife and daughters when they want to hunt.

Yeah....if I had to pick only ONE single caliber, it would likely be the 338 RUM as well. Very powerful and flat shooting and able to take anything in North America with aplomb and nearly any animal in the world.

22-250 for the little stuff with big tails
300 Rem SAUM for the big stuff with little tials

also have 300 Win Mag, 270 WSM, and 30-30 but don't use them much anymore.

I absolutely love the 338 lapua mag. much more accurate and a much better overall caliber than the 300 win mag or the 338 win that I've shot before.

Maybe do a standard version and a mag

standard version
223
25-06
270 or 280
30-06

Mag version
220 swift
264 Win Mag
300 Win Mag
338 RUM

.30-06 or 7mm WBY MAG

"soon the love in her heart, will the stink on her fist"

FREE LEONARD PELTIER

300 win mag for big game

300 win mag for coyotes

300 win mag for rocks, rabbits and anything else you can think of.

.308 Winchester
.338 RUM
.270 Winchester
30-06 Springfield

I own 'em all and could take about everything but Africa's biggest and baddest with this arsenal.

I have killed a lot of shiz with my 22-250. For an all around if I could have one gun forever and could load any bullet for my animal choice it would be a 30.06. 110gr on up.

Well, own 22, 22 mag, 22 hornet, 222, 223, 22-250, 243, 257 Roberts, 25-06, 243, 6 mm, 270, 270 WSM, 270 Weatherby Mag,7mm-08, 280, 7mm Mag, 30-06, 300 win mag, 300 ultra mag, 300 Weatherby Mag, 7-30 waters, 357 mag, 44 mag and 30-30 of course. My favorite calibers are:

1. 243
2. 270
3. 270 Weatherby Mag
4. 280
5. 22-250
6. 257 Roberts
