I've been looking over the 2010 Big Game Guide book and have noticed that the Paunsaugant Muzzleload season has been moved to be inline with the rest of the state (Mid Sept). Anyone have any thouhgts what this is going to do to the drawing odds for both any weapon and Muzzleloader? I was debating about putting in for the Pausaugant Rifle this year with my 9 points. But with these changes I think that it's going to make it harder for me to draw now, not that I was going to draw anyway.

If it helps you, I'm going to switch to the any weapon and not put in for the musket tag. I have always put in for the late season tag and now with the change I'm forced to use a rifle. I guess I never liked muskets anyways. It was the season dates that were attractive. I believe your correct about it becoming more difficult to get the rifle tag because of people switching over for the now later rifle dates. Last year I was one of four people that did not draw the musket tag at my point level. I'm thinking I should get the rifle hunt this year. It should be interesting to see what happens.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-07-10 AT 08:53AM (MST)[p]It is hard to say what it will do to the hunter pool. Personally I am putting in for elk, but if I were to do the Pauns this year I would go with my bow, then the muzz, then a rifle. I think this will mix things up a lot in who draws, and with how many points. Plus they have the management tags on there, which will gain the attention of some hunters. Personally I think the management tag is the best tag on the Pauns. My mom had a rifle tag this past season, and she saw some monster 3x4s the first five days. There was one that I would have cracked in a second, but he was only a 5x3 27" wide...monster mass...great buck.

Don't give up with 9 points my mom got the rifle with 8.

Personally I love archery and hope to someday get my elk tag on the Pahvant, so I can start my trek to the Pauns for my buck with my bow.

i had 14pts last year didnt draw muzzy tag. have not seen regs. what are they changing? i dont know what to put in for this year maybe the henrys or pauns. i should draw one of these years

>if you have 14 points I
>would hold off for Henry's
>Tag!

that totally depends on if he is a non resident or resident.

a non resident who has 16 points has the same chance at drawing a Henry tag as a guy with 1 point. Unless they are giving out more tags. last i checked they only gave out 1 tag and it wont go to the guy with high points. It is a random lottery drawing.

I would go pauns if you are a non res. You would be wasting money and time going with Henry tag if you are a non res.

Archery is a year round commitment!!

400bull is a Utah resident ... if he has 14 points he should hold for Henrys last year 14 point had a 69% chance of drawing any weapon tag... 15 points with Muzzy tag he would have drawn....I would hold for a Henrys tag. He should draw within 3 years!

Right now, Henry is only one tag per season for nonresidents, no max points tag. 14 points is two off the top, but if a second tag is ever added, have to wait (at maybe one per year, they need 4 tags for two per year, that will never happen) till all those ahead draw to compete with all in the 14 point pool for the max points tag. No telling if/when the second will come....Honestly, a Henry tag is a pipe dream for a 14 point nonresident. 14 points puts a nonresident in the max points round for all Paunsaugant hunts. I have 14 nonresident points too....

im nonresident thats why i heve been putting for pauns.
henrys would be cool but i think it might be a dream.

I currently have 9 resident deer points and was debating about putting in for the Paunsaugant this year. With the changes that are going on this year I have been thinking that the Fillmore Oak Creek may give me a better chance at drawing a tag. I was wonder what everyone else thought about the changes to see what unit I want to apply for this year.

The pauns muzzy will be a slam dunk this year! Big bucks standing around looking dumb because of the date. The best part is that you will actually be able to scout it and then find your deer in the same spot you found him scouting.

Ya I'm sitting on 13 NR points with the same decision. I have no hope for a Henries tag.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-14-10 AT 03:45PM (MST)[p]Isnt the paunsaugant Muzzy at the end of Sept and into Oct this year??? why would the Big bucks be standing around looking Dumb.... I think the Rut is in November.. According to the the Big game book the muzzy hunt is Sept 29th to Oct 7th.

Talk to those who have drawn in 2008 or earlier for the rifle hunt. Three days of good hunting and the deer get their calendars out. They're wanted South on the 1st of October.

Not rut dumb, but oh crap whats going on with all these hunters when there shouldn't be a season. Mark my words some big bucks will be hitting the dirt come late september on the Pauns!

Always ensuring that everyone has at least a shot at a tag is right, making the odd number tag go to the masses totally cool, and right and fair.....Taking 50% of the primo nonresident tags to support the expo is plain WRONG!!!!
