I have been looking at hunting this area. I hear its very tough with a bow, but if you do the work it can pay off. any tips about the area would be grateful. success stories too!

Good luck getting any success stories and or tips! That place is in a lot of peoples "back yards" around here.

Sit tall in the saddle, hold your head up high, keep your eyes fixed to where the trail meets the sky...

wow people have back yards that are at 11000FT now?

Im talking about hunting the high country. 9000FT and up.

My friends cousin hunted it and killed a monster.

sounds like you are already in the know. I dont have a frinds uncles brother that has killed anything off that area.

Archery is a year round commitment!!

Everyone has a cousin's uncle that knows about this place! Get as far away from the most populated area (Salt Lake) in the state and your hunt will be a lot more enjoyable! Many, and I mean many horsemen hunt this area. Almost a death wish if you choose to hike in! Odds are, there will be a pack string awaiting your arrival! Cool country, but there is definitely better places to exert your self into!

LAST EDITED ON Jan-14-10 AT 09:13PM (MST)[p]Antlerglazed, lone peak is a watershed. Hope your friends don't get caught up there on horses! Are they hunting the salt lake county or utah county side?

I just wanted to do a packin hunt with my friend. I was told this maybe a good place to give a try at it. It great lookin country. but really my friends cousin did shoot a big velvet buck there, I have seen the deer it scored 221.

But I guess Ill go else where

mathewsman, I'm speaking of the UC side of the area. I know once you get up top it's "supposed" to be a water shed area, but that doesn't seem to stop them. Lots of pressure on the Alpine side, period.

You speak of this 220 buck like it's unheard of to kill a buck like that or that this area is like hunting the Henry's! FYI, The front is well known for producing 200+ bucks. Why even waste your time posting if you already know everything about this place!? I gave my input that you asked for, no need to get defensive! Over 1.5 million people live at the base of this mtn, not saying there's not a 200 inch buck up there, but I'm am saying that for every ten inches of antler that's up there, there's more than one guy looking for them! But, your odds of being alone on opening day are great, "NOT"!!!!

Antlerglazed,
I think you're mixing me up with elkhuntn247. He was the origional poster that asked the question about lone peak. I just responded to your post about friends on horses. Your point is well taken though as there are alot of people, but I do disagree that there are tons of people that hunt up on top. Maybe I'm presuming that elkhuntn247 is talking about the salt lake county side where (1) it IS watershed and, (2) archery only (from his orgional comment about the challenge of taking a buck with a bow) and, (3) not near the hunting pressure. And by the way, as far as trophy potential and quality of bucks I WILL say that lone peak rivals ANY unit in this state, "period!" Granted they are not behind every tree or bush and one cannot drive his truck or quad to them or gun them down from 2 canyons away, but they ARE there...and on a 35 dollar GENERAL tag to boot. I'm not being defensive.

Mathewsman,

The first part of my post was the only part intended for you, sorry for the confusion. I was assuming that since most of the lp wilderness is on the uc side, that was what he was referring too, not to mention the sl side of the area is straight up! Awesome country, big buck potential, there is no arguing that!
