Unit 21-2nd or 3rd?

LAST EDITED ON Jan-23-10 AT 08:38PM (MST)[p]I have 9 resident points for elk and deer. Since I just found out I only have a 46% chance of drawing my elk unit I am looking into my deer unit. I could draw 21-3rd season next year for sure and I could draw 21-2nd season this year for sure.
My dilemna is this. My youngest son will be old enough to hunt next year and can't wait. I want to hunt 3rd season simply because it is better, But I am thinking of just drawing 2nd season to get it overwith and be able to take him hunting next year. I only get 1 week vacation per year so doing both(hunting 21=3rd sesaon and taking him on his hunt) cant happen.
I know with the calendar roll over this year that 2nd season is going to be later but I dont think it will be late enough.
So how much better is 21-3rd season than 2nd??

stick with third even if you take 2 years off you have too much time invested to waste it on 2nd season with only 1 week of vacation, if you had a bunch of time to scout then I would say either one but with limited time I recommend sticking it out for 3rd.

You do have the '' horns of a dellima''.. You know I've posted before and I'm not afraid of the 2nd season , but I know the 3rd is super. We didn't have any trouble finding alot of bucks this year. With the late start , I don't think there will be much differance in the two , EXCEPT for the elk hunters. There are alot of elk hunters in 2nd season , but I really didn't have an issue with them. You'll get a nice buck either way , but I'd want to have at a minimum of at least 5 full days of hunting.Do your scouting IN SEASON if your short on time.

You have bacially two options , go 2nd this year , or wait till year after next and go 3rd.... ( PS.. I never was very patient at waiting lol )...

One last option and maybe best option would be , take your son with you when you go.

yea he wants to shoot one himself. and the year after next i will most likely draw my elk unit. I am sick of this points game I will be happy when me and my kids all have the same points and can hunt together. I have no idea what to do.

third is definitely better but you might not draw it with nine or ten. I know a couple guys with ten who didn't draw it this year. fun hunt though.

With some weather 2nd could be as good as third you just can't count on having any weather. I would go 3rd but if you want to hunt sooner go 2nd and spend a couple of weekends prior to the hunt to scout.
