Eastman's Hunting Journal

I am researching new areas to hunt in Wyoming and was wondering if it is worth subscribing to EHJ for a research tool?

Your thoughts?

Every resource you have will help you along the way, however with information from Eastman's and Hunting Fool you have to realize that several thousand hard core hunters have the exact same information. I guess it all depends on where you are at on your research. If you are just beginning it explains all of the states draws and how they work which might be beneficial. If you already know how it works and are looking for a good area, you won't be alone. Hope that helps.

I like eastmans mags. You will learn something from them. If not its always fun to read hunting stories and look at horn porn.

I think the Eastmans hunting journal is the best magazine out, especially for the do-it-yourself hunter. I have subscribed to some of the other magazines dedicated to hunting western trophy game and found they all all offer basically the same research. However, I have been put off by some of the publications that seem to primarily feature hunters who have doughed out alot of money for governor tags and auctions, ect. articles about hunters who have six guides that have located a good animal before the hunter shows up is a put off to me. The big money and privelage just kinda off seeps through the pages and is a put off to me. Now don't get me wrong, if I had the money I would spend it just as quick as a rich guy might on tag. I just like to keep it real and read about others guys who hunt the way I do, do-it-yourself.

Eastmans is a good magazine, and I agree with what was said earlier that if you are new the applying in the western states their MRS section can be helpful. If you are looking for the inside track on sleeper units or some other secret spots you are bound to be disappointed.

Is there such a thing as "sleeper" units anymore? EHJ and Huntin Fool or others will help with generic information and when and how to apply, etc. but the rest will take lots of glassing, walking and willingness to get away from the crowd!

I agree.

For general western states, huntin fool provides the best product. For Wyoming only, Eastman's MRS provides the best overall porduct 2nd to none. Also, most of the stories are from DIY public land hunts where the playing field is pretty much level.

I'm not sure that the average hunter is on equal ground with Guy and the boys! They have built a good business but they also hunt with lots of outfitters on private land and not entirely on public land.

I subscribe to both EHJ and Huntin'Fool. They each have there own use's. I use both to compare info, which for the most part is comparable. I never apply for the tops units due to the fact that after its published, the draw odds go through the roof. (If they wernt already) I try to plit the difference. I have been extremely successful hunting general over the counter tags or second, third choice tags, but both magazines point you in the right direction.

What you get with the huntin' foll is the member contacts. Ive called many members that have hunted the same unit I intend to hunt and they have been an invaluable tool. That alone in my opinion is worth the price of the subscription.

Each has its uses and every bit helps.

oh and I forgot, I completley agree with the impression that the huntin' fool gives off about rich hunters. It turns me off too, but like I said I use it as a tool not trying to imulate the rich folks, if anything trying to do it better with less money spent. research is the key. Use them for what their worth.

But Guy doesn't write the stories in the Journal. That is what makes Eastman's so good....the stories are written by, and are from, real folks like us. Some are DIY and some are guided but the stories are from the subscribers.

I also think Eastmans is a good resource & The Huntin Fool is the best out there. I subscribe to both.

EHJ, EBHJ and Huntin Fool are very good magazines. Both provide slightly different information which is great because you are not paying for two different magazines to provide the same information.

Do you get Huntin Fool? They have twice as many stories all written by their members or people who submit stories. Got mine yesterday... 11 year old kid on the cover! Great bull...

I had a subscription to huntn fool, and what it looks like to me , is a place for the carter's to show off that they kill a huge deer and elk every issue, not that there is any thing wrong with that ,I wish it was me, but you dont see ryan hatch with a kill in every issue he has, I wonder if they get alot of free tags for references and thats how they have so many articles about them selves, In my opinion $100 subcription is way to much to look at articles with the owners in every issue,

You have to consider that the Carter's are hunting multiple states/provinces for multiple species. While I'm not much for showing off my animals(anymore),some are.Myself,I like looking at all the pics, regardless of who killed the critter.Ryan basically only hunts for mulies, and only kills once in awhile. His standards are slightly higher than the rest of us(except for the rez boys,of course!).Okay, way higher!Ryan does not kill enough animals in a year to put his pic in every issue! Also,"Huntin' Fool" is a monthly publication, and "Muley Crazy" is bi-monthly,so I don't think the cost differential is that extreme. While I subscribe to both,HF will send you a list of members that have hunted the unit you drew,so you can call them and chat. Also,Garth and Jason(and the rest of the staff)will talk to you about your unit when you call them.Eastman's doesn't offer the list.

I really appreciate all of the posts on this topic. This website is a hell of a resources in itself.

Thanks again and keep the post up.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-27-10 AT 10:53AM (MST)[p]I too subscribe to both and enjoy them. The ability to contact someone who has had the tag and has hunted the unit is a benefit of the huntin' fool. However, I wish they would give you the names and numbers BEFORE you apply, not just after you draw. To me that would have even more value. Also remember that most of the info that they use to evaluate units is 3rd, 4th, or 5th hand. I'm sure they do their best but there is just no way for their limited staff to accurately evaluate the huge number of units that they analyze. I've had very different personal evaluations of units I've hunted than what their evaluations have been. Also many state / federal officials
( biologists, wardens, etc.. )are reluctant to give complete information to someone who is going to sell it for a profit - and I can understand that. So, while the info from those mags can helpful its just a starting point ( Eastmans does say that in their MRS section ). It is by no means the gospel that some people seem to think it is. GOOD LUCK. Chip

You can't get too much info! That's why I subscribe to them all and the stories are a bonus. For mule deer you need to subscribe to MuleyCrazy but if only one for everything I would take HuntinFool.
