4 1/2-5 1/2

Crest are rounded through the forth tooth with a little wear into the fifth. Dentine is thicker than the enamel through the fifth but not into the sixth tooth...

I'd say he was about 6 months to a year and well on his way to being a new world record.... You killed this on the Jicarilla right?

I do! I'll get some pictures taken and post them. Thanks for your reply.

I would love to hunt the Jic one day. This was taken on BLM land.

I uploaded a picture of the lower jaw, thanks!

Number of tines and age have no relationship whatsoever.

The number of tines are usually dictated by genetics and enviromental factors, for example injuring a horn during velvet.

The lingual crests are clearly defined and from that angle there appears to be more enamel than dentine so I would lean toward 3 1/2. In one of the pictures of his upper jaw there was a shot where the dentine was wider than the enamel, but I've never really seen pictures of the upper teeth for aging though. I would say 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 tops.

If you really want to know, you can send in the 2 lower incisor teeth to be aged by a lab using cementum annuli aging. I send my whitetail incisors in there to get aged and am going to send this year's mule deer in as well. I just keep forgetting to do it.

Here's a comparison pic for you. The upper jawbone is from a 2 1/2 year old. The lower jawbone is from an 8 1/2 year old based on being aged by a lab using the cementum annuli method.

Same jawbones with the 8 1/2 year old on the right.

Of course it doesn't help that the 2 1/2 year olds jawbone has been out in in sun in a cage trap for a couple years, but it really is amazing how much they wear their teeth down over the years.

Here's a pdf article on aging based on tooth wear for whitetails. I would assume mule deer would be similar.

Hope this helps.

Epointer I think you need practice typing with your sarcasm keys. Apparently it is flying right over Overkill's head. I laughed though.

Given the fact that this site has changed so much over the years, and in reading some of the recent posts and topics here, can you blame me for taking him seriously?

No I don't blame you . I work with him everyday so I know when he's BS'ing, which is most of the time. Sorry if I offended.

He can't be very old, cause he didn't do a very good job brushing. And he must've had a neglectful set of parents too, letting him get away with no brushing or flossing and then allowing him go "play in the street" and get shot up. Poor kid never had a chance!

I'd also guess 3 1/2. MAYBE 4 1/2, but really thinking 3.
Absolutely gorgeous rack though. Have a field shot of him you could share?
Congrats on an awesome buck.
