I'd been hearing the rumor for months.
It's true.

Is this the buck taken by the guy who owns Idaho Grocery in Susanville?

Kinda looks like him and he told me that he took a big buck this year but my understanding was it was only 35 or 36" :)

antlers sure are turned funny, left eye bulging pretty bad, And i have never seen a bullet in my life make a deer bleed from the ears! looks to me like its been hit by a car and is most likely broken.

yeah its pretty easy to stretch it out to 42 inches with a busted skull!!

That is a big deer but I think the skull is busted. Look at the guys shirt sleeve, He might be a rent a cop. Or a F&G maybe. Ron

I think he's holding it so it's as wide as he can make it, never seen horns come straight out the sides like that! still a nice buck, will be a good mount but no way to score it. (roadkill?)

LAST EDITED ON Jan-28-10 AT 06:35PM (MST)[p]Yeah, I'd have to concur - something seems a bit fishy. :)

Hunter Harry didn't answer my question but i'm thinking that this is the buck that i talked to the shooter about. At the time, i do kinda remember him saying something about the rack being damaged. He did tell me though, that it was like a 35 or 36" buck. After seeing this picture, i can believe that easy enough!

Dandy!!

LAST EDITED ON Jan-28-10 AT 09:08PM (MST)[p]This pic was posted a couple of months ago, I cant remeber anything that was said, but I do know that somebody else came on and posted live photos of the buck. I thought that it didnt look right ether but the live photos looked to be the same deer even though they were not the best photos in the world.

I just went through looking for the other post and can't find it.

Dose anybody else remember that post.

Edit: also are Cali deer tags red like that one is, its not Utah, or Colorado.

A friend I was hunting with in Utah back in 2000 shot a forked horn and hit it in the back of the head and split the skull cap.
Since I had just been to WYO with two other guys and they shot small forked horns too, I knew how wide they were.
So with a tape measure in the picture on the UT buck, had the shooter keep spreading the antlers out till it was about 1" wider and took pictures.
When he released the spread on the antlers, the width went from 20" to -7".......they over lapped and stayed that way....LOL
He won the bet between the two guys as the WY hunters were not there............still don't know after 9 years now.

This buck is real! I know the guy who knows the guy who shot it. He took it in the Selway wilderness.

I've seen elk on the hoof with one twisted forward and one twisted back like that. It could happen.

A couple of you guys are close, but here is the real story. A couple of months ago I heard of a giant buck killed in X-5a by the owner of Idaho grocery in SUSANVILLE CA. So I went by there to see for myself. There it was sitting on the meat counter and it looked to be about 28 inches. I told him the story about it being close to 40 inches and he just laughed stating that he had shot it in the back of the head and that he had since repaired the cap which I could plainly see.A couple pictures had been taken to clown some friends when the antlers were laid out flat. The buck scores around 170 or maybe a little better and is 28 or 29 inches wide. Great Kali buck but not 40 inches. Oh I almost forgot, they have great Tri-tips too. BH1

Thought that was the guy and said so in post #3. He's the one who told me 35" when i dropped the front half of my buck in there to be burgerized, so it's on him as to his credibility. Yes, it is still, a very nice Kali buck!!

note; the front part of my wy buck, head and hide off, weighed 88lbs on his hook. I got a "bunch" of excellent burger from the deal and he charged me $32., more than fair.
