Muley Food Sources

I am ready to dedicate myself to find a big buck this year and was curious as to what there main food sources are? Thanks.

Green stuff, found mostly in proximity to water sources and relatively free of predators........

Specific vegatation varies from habitat to habitat and might require some degree of investigation in the area you are going to hunt.

nickman is absolutely correct. I have hunted and seen bucks in the snowberry bushes, seen them eating lichens off of rocks and trees, in alfalfa fields, beet fields, and willow flats. Just depends on the time of year, location and external pressures. Water sources aren't always a sure thing either as bucks can sometimes find enough moisture in the green feed they eat and aren't tied to water as frequently. They will also eat snow if they need too. Scout the areas that you find interesting and then focus on what you see deer eating. Be prepared as this will change with the seasons and forage availability. Good luck.

Their main food source is solitude. A bucks diet changes frequently depending on the geography, month, temps, human activity, etc. If your hunting in Aug-Sept and its a dry year/area try to focus on greener vegetative areas. In Oct-Nov I believe food is the last thing on a bucks mind...their focus is on cover, dodging bullets or finding a hot doe.

For a starting point follow the deer this spring as they are migrating back to their summer range.
