Hey,

I meant to do this earlier but here goes. I had asked for some advice after getting my 83 year old a deer tag on Ft Carson and many people here were able to help.

Well how did it go???? We ended up turning in his tag the day before the season to get his points back. It is a daunting task to get guns, vehicles, go to orientations, come back again to get it all squared away cause this or that office is only open at this time. But I was able to get it all in line?.as far as the logistical issues. Okay so we are ready to chase the reputed Big Carson Bucks.

We learned early in the year at best case scenario, we would have only a few areas to hunt in and possibly only low velocity (Muzzy-slug). I scouted for three days before the season without my dad and went to one of the areas that MIGHT be open and in three days did not see a single deer. I am no rookie to this game and sort of pride myself on spotting game. Not a single deer.

The guy who was running the hunts was very helpful but his hands were tied with Military maneuvers. At one point I made a wrong turn and was looking to the wrong side of the road and was out of my checked out area by like 200 yards and he gave me a break, but added if one of the other guys had contacted me for sure I would have been banned for the year. Give me a break my dad used 8 points to get this tag. Also at one point I had scouted one area and changed to another. When you change you need to drive all the way back to the station and get another pass?.which I did. I was then way down south and passed an official looking truck going the other way which pulled a hard u-turn and drove me down waving his arm out the window. He approached me and demanded to see my range pass. I showed it to him and he looked at it and from his demaneaor and tone of voice I could see he was disappointed saying ?Oh I saw your truck in the other area and thought you didn't change your pass?, it seemed clear to me he was disappointed he didn't ?bust? me.

As opening weekend approached, with no deer spotted, more closures likley and frankly having had my fill of the whole program we decided to turn his tag in.

I want to thank all who gave me some tips and help in my dads hunt. He still has his points but looks like I will be in Afghanistan next year so not sure what will happen.

Again Thanks again
Ted

Hello Ted, too bad it didn't work out for you. When I was sitting in that training class it really didn't seem like it was anything a hunter would want to deal with and that they didn't want anyone there.
I never did go out there either for elk, didn't want to waste my time, especially when that guy was trying to tell us there is a 370 & 400" bull he has been chasing :-o I lost all creditability with him at that point.
The bright side is your dad will have 1 or 2 more points to try for hunt in the future.
Best of Luck.

This has been my experience EVERY TIME I attempted to hunt FT. Carson, so I finally quit about 4 years ago. Don't know if you know this or not, but I heard that the base actually closed for the last 4 days of the season this year, so the folks that hadn't killed their deer by that time had no chance to fill their tag.

Heck of a way to end a hunt that cost a guy 6 or 7 points. I'm sure there are a few good deer left on Carson, but there are a heck of a lot of other places that provide a better hunt with a fraction of the "hassle factor" that one experiences on Ft. Carson.

Just my .02 cents

I bowhunted there last August. Great Hunt! whats so hard about stopping at range control on your way out to the training areas and signing in on a little piece of paper and stopping there when you leave to sign out? you have to drive past the place anyways.

Thats too bad, what areas did you focus on? Pinyon Canyon has some huge bucks in it. When i was stationed there i seen some nice deer. Its too bad that you had that kind of experience. Good luck in afganistan.

I recall a few years back my buddy and I had archery tags for pinyon canyon and hunted the military manuever base. We had 3 different 2 week periods to hunt, and waited for the last one in hopes of the deer being in the rut. At that time we were allowed to camp in a designated area on the base. We went about the week before Christmas and had planned on hunting for 8-9 days. The Wednesday before Christmas we were told they were shutting down the base at noon on Thursday to get ready for the Friday Christmas party and the base would be closed the entire weekend. We had to pick up camp and move off base the next morning. We lost 4 days of our planned hunt. Very disappointing.

Thanks for the geography lesson pal.

Pinion canyon is south east of the springs towards Kansas, New Mexico and Oklahoma and you can hunt there.

your a little mixed up with your directions thought id help you out a little bit. your welcome chief.

You were a little mixed up about hunting pinion canyon, glad I could help you as well, pal. Now your up to date on where it is at relative to Colorado Springs, which seems like a big priority for you.

Pinyon Canyon is a special tag and it takes like 13 points I think...there was a good chance MAYBE we would get to hunt at all and not even sure where....but also a good chance we might have only two days in unknown areas using low velocity.....at my dads age we needed good access and ample opportunity and it looked like niether was going to happen....and might not even get a chance to hunt at all

the weekend is the best time to go, almost all TA's are open. The post commander hardly ever lets units train on the weekend.

actually with all the new troops they are rcv'g there, the training schedule is ridiculous and from what the guy was saying you may not get any days to hunt. Plus this year Ft. Carson's seasons mirror the states season dates/weapons (alot more restrictive).

Ok i didnt know pinon canyon was a different draw, but i know there are deer all over base with decent bucks. They have training all the time i cant remember the program it is but its 30 days of training to get you ready for combat when your going to a unit that is deployed. They have it every month and they have air force come out from peterson. Unless its changed from 2007. If i remember right to pinyon canyon is a bowhunt too. I could be wrong. Fort Carson is west of fountain and south the springs

Not all units that deploy go to pinion for a 30 day ftx most units just do it on fort carson. Thanks for tellin me where fort carson is but seeing that I'm actually stationed at carson and actually live on fort carson I really don't need help with that. But thanks.

could be he WASN'T giving you directions but letting other people know the where.? Not everything is black and white.
Now what was this post about,

"I have found if you go the extra mile it's Never crowded".

I wasnt talking about a FTX, its something with an R Its for people coming from different divisions, prior service, or air force personal, people that didnt get the training with their units...IE pregnant women, peole that had surgeries ...Glad to know you know where Fort Carson is Since most people there cant find their butt with their friends nose. What was this post about again i dont remember, i thought it was a lesson in map reading skills since not all of us are so edumacated..
