Scoring

Does anyone have a good website or video that shows exactly how to score mule deer. I have looked at a couple but still seem confused. I got a sheet off of the Boone and Crockett club but still cant quite figure it out. What measurements do I total? Total no. of points, tip to tip spread, greatest spread, inside spread of main beams, length of abnormal points, length of main beams, g1 g2 g3 g4, and then all the circumfrences? What do I deduct? Any help would be great.

The only spread that matters when scoring is the inside spread.
You take 4 mass measurements per side
G1 = eye guard
G2 = very back tine that goes straight up
G3= the tine that branches off the g2 to make it look like a Y
G4 = the other tine that branches off the main beam to make the front fork (assuming this is a typical).

*The inside spread MAY NOT exceed the length of the shortest main beam.

When scoring a typical to acheive a net score you must subtract the differences and or make both sides equal. ie. Buck x has a g2 of 19" on the left and 18" on the right you must subtract 1" from the 19" g2 to make it equal.

Once you've crushed numbers and subracted everything you will have a net typical score.

For non typical you do the same as above except you ad all the E points. Say you have a NT buck that scores 240 NT ass a 12x13 it doesn't matter that one side has more than the other. You are awarded all extra points with out having to deduct. * the only deductions you have to do AGAIN is the frame of the deer. It's simple bro.... Keep trying and practice you'll get it

Actually, the inside spread can not exceed the length of the LONGEST main beam.

Yes, this is correct. Another tip and somthing cool to do is when you see singles or sets is to guess the score. Then measure and see how close you were. The more horns you can get your tape on the better you will become.

This may only apply to SW Colorado Elk where utehunter hunts but don't forget the X by 1.5 rule!
Just joking uteboy,lol!

You can always cut the first 6 inches off of your measuring tape. I know a few guys that score like that.
