This is my 09 buck, I just finished it. I had to boil it a couple of times, spent a few hours with a knife, then two rounds of bleach. Does this seem about right? Do you have an easier way? Anyone use beetles, and are they worth it? Thanks-

LAST EDITED ON Feb-18-10 AT 10:17PM (MST)[p]I would say for your first time that looks terrible! Ha Ha just kidding. It looks way good. The only easier way is to give it to your taxi and let him do it.

The sargent boys just got some beetles. im going to try my bear skull in them. Ill let you know how it goes.

WOW - looks pretty sweet. Good job - I LIKE that buck. Congrats.

Thanks guys, ya I saw one that was mounted on a shed antler so that it could sit on like an end table or a safe. So I think I will give that a try once I find a shed that is suitable. My taxi wanted 125, I did it for about 12 bucks, just the cost of the bleach and I still have plenty left over.

Hey boot, you better mark your bear skull so you dont get it confused with the mink skulls that might be in there..Just kidding! let me know how it turns out buddy-

Very professional looking work and a nice buck to boot.

You keep refering to bleach. Did you really use bleach or was it peroxide? I heard bleach deteriorates the skull.

Please post the mount when you get it on the antler. That sounds cool.

Slick

Ya, you are correct. It is peroxide I use the term bleach loosely. I used the "bleaching" products used for hair. It was not an actual bleach, that is too corrosive to bone. Thanks for the clarification.

Instead of using a knife and scraping on it for hours try using a pressure washer. It will peel the skin and all the junk right off after you've already boiled it. This will save you a few hours definitely.

i clean off alot with knife, boil for a while (2 hrs) use a power washer (really works great) then paint it with peroxide and powder bleach let it sit overnight and it comes out perfect

You did a great job!

To answer your next question, yes, beatles are absolutely worth
it. I wouldn't consider having a Euro Mount done any other way.

I a bear and bison done with beatles. I have had an elk and deer
"boiled". Beatle method definately looks better.

it looks great. i have found that is you mix in 2 boxes of baking soda the remaining meat turns to jelly and almost falls off the bone.
