I cant believe I drew out for the Bookcliffs Deer any weapon in the expo draw. Talk about lucky, I never draw. I have never been to the area so we will be hitting it hard with some scouting. Anyone with starting points will be much appreciated. Are there wilderness/no road areas to get into and get away from the crowds? I am just blown away and want to make the most of the opportunity. Thanks in advance for any info. My email address is below if you would rather email than post.

first congratulations, But i have to tell you that i had a tag offered to me by the Utah DWR about two weeks prior to the season last year after someone turned it back in, so I bought it, I was beside myself to finally have a coveted bookcliffs deer tag after waiting for 7 years to draw one. But i will tell you that after alot of scouting i was ready for the hunt. I was not to discouraged until the opener weekend when about 15,000 people moved in! I live in grand Junction co. and i was just driving up everyday so i had the opportunity to hunt anywhere that i wanted and i did. I hunted the roadless area and the top from one end to the other for 5 days and was so disgusted with the amount of people out there I tagged out and left. I don't in anyway want to discourage you, but the Utah DWR has completely sold out and gone for the almighty dollar and ruined a once excellent hunting area by over selling the Tags. I saw alot of small bucks heading home in the back of trucks, alot in the 20-23 inch class. The DWR needs to get a handle on this ( if it's not to late ) Way too many hunters!!! It was worse than hunting a general season area!

To answer you second question there is alot of roadless area and if you are physically able you should spend some time scouting that area. it does offer some better quality bucks than most areas up on top and alot less people for sure. If you would like some more information drop me a line @ [email protected] Thanks Shane

LAST EDITED ON Feb-19-10 AT 06:34PM (MST)[p]Scouting is very hard down there because the hunt is during the migration, you would benefeit to go there now and check things out. They will be in similar areas during the hunt next year. There are a ton of people there but if you get off the road a little ways you will see some bigger bucks. However, I agree with outfitter, overall quality is dropping every year because it is so overhunted. Best of luck to ya. I am very jealous you got the tag, I thought for sure I was going to draw it.

Rub some dirt on it, ya sissy!

That sounds like great advice to head out there now. I will probably try to get out there next weekend. What should I expect for being able to travel the area? Snowmobiles needed, four wheelers needed to get to trailheads?

Thanks everyone for the congrats, I hope I can get something decent for the area.

outfitter_1, I just sent a private message I tried using your email address and it bounced back.

I was down there a few weeks ago, there is not enough snow for a sled, I would take a quad and some warm gear. most of the roads were snowpacked but easy to travel.

Take exit 2 and turn left...

It will take you about 4 hours to the thompson springs turn off from Ogden and about 45 mins to the trailhead from there. If you go to the north side of the books it will take you about 3 hours to the Ouray turnoff on Hwy 40 then about 1-2 hours south on the Ouray road and the seep ridge road to where the deer are. They are down about the Kings wells area and on up to buck ridge and the lower cedar country.
