OK, I've decided that this is the year that my son and I are going to use our 7 preference points for Colorado Deer, and elk too. I honestly don't have any idea where we're going to apply, but would appreciate some opinions on which units might offer a nice hunt for that number of points. We'll go either rifle or muzzleloader for deer, probably not archery, though we'll likely get archery elk tags, and maybe build another point for them unless there's a real nice hunt for 7 points. OK, any ideas/opinions? (I know, asking this bunch for opinions is dangerous! ;-) )

I've been looking at unit 21 for next year maybe ,it looks like it has some potental but I'm not sure of the quality of bucks it holds but it does have a lot of deer.I'm in the same boat as you I have 8 points I think...good luck to you and your son

Just a hunch, but with all the chatter on second rifle for area 21, it will take more than 7 points to get this tag.

Yes, I've pretty much concluded from the research I've done (which is quite a lot) that it'll take more than 7 or 8 points to draw unit 21 in all liklihood.

I've done quite a bit of research on units, but haven't figured out where we'll apply. I'm just looking for opinions from other long time, or not so long time, MM'ers on where I should apply. Who knows, maybe there'll be a 2010 version of the 'Monroe Elk Hunt' thread if we draw a nice unit.

Several of you have replied privately with some great ideas, thank you. Actually, as I mentioned in my replies to you, those are some of the main units we're considering, just trying to make as informed a decision as it is possible to make. Thanks for the help so far, looking forward to hearing more if anyone has any good ideas.

I really like the Early Season rifle hunts. It gives you the high country experience, hunting high-country bachelor herd-bucks the way you would see them during bow season but you have the rifle to take care of business when you find the one you're looking for.
