I have a really good chance of drawing the.. books.. for archery this year......is it really as sh..ty as every 1 says..

I've never heard it was bad hunting, just not the best unit for a trophy buck, everyone who hunts it tends to see tons of bucks and deer and enjoys the hunt. Not too bad of a deal in my opinion.

Don't set your expectations on a huge buck. You can have high expectations about a fun hunt with plenty of deer to look at/try a stalk.

NO GUTS, NO STORY!!

If you hunt hard, pre scout, and set up on water holes etc. you will have a chance at a GREAT buck (165-190). If you expect to shoot a great buck in the range listed above out of the back of your pickup, you need to put in for something else. Every year including the upcoming season there is a 200 incher killed in the books, and multiple 170-190 bucks. if you plan, scout, and put in your time, you will have chances of bucks of a lifetime. For those who proclaim the books sucks, you are not hunting, you are the ones hunting from the back of your trucks hoping a giant walks in front of the truck! Get off the roads an hunt, it will be an awesome hunt for you. a few years back you would have had a chance at a giant from the truck, but now they are still there, they just need to be glassed, and hunted.

Put in, hunt hard, and post your pics of your 180 buck here for all of us to see!!

Hey outlaw how many points do you have? I put in for the same hunt (archery deer) with 6 points plus this years application-I'm hoping to draw as well! Like you I'm really anxious for the results of the draw and more than anything I would really like to know what to expect out of this hunt. I've got no problem bivying out for a week if that's what it takes to get to the bigger bucks. I could probably swing 3 or 4 weekend scouting trips over the course of the summer. I just need to know where to start-never been there! Any pm's would really help big time!

hey man i have 6 points.. odds are we should draw.. do you know the area.. my family has hunted there since the 50s.. until they shut it down to draw only...

Besides the Henry's, I don't think there is a funner hunt than the Books archery. Like what was said, its not a trophy area, but there are some great trophy bucks there. If you draw, you will have a great time. I did not draw with 6 pnts last year. Maybe I'm just unlucky.

With the odds from last year those of us with 6 points only have about a 10% chance to draw. I drew an archery tag in 2001 and I had a great time. I shot a 21" 5X4 on the last weekend, but chased and missed a couple others earlier in the hunt(including a 30in+ 3 point).

I hunted it 2 years ago, and loved it. It was the funnest hunt i've ever been on. Stalked deer all day everyday. I had to come home early unexpectedly, so I settled on a 4x4 24" buck. I chased many bigger bucks though. 2 that I know would've gone 185 or so. Hunt hard, and you'll love that hunt

My son and I both have 7 points and should draw the archery hunt this year. For many years I used to backpack into the roadless area and hunt each year.

The last year I hunted there was the last year it was open as a general area. I saw more cougars that year (3) than I did four points buck deer (1).

I used to hunt bear out there every year when it was an over the counter permit, so the I am anxious to get back out there and see some of my very favorite country on earth.

Here's a couple photos of a buck deer I took on one of those roadless area backpacks and my very first and last baited bears from the Books.

I plan to take a couple trips out there and shoot some photos if we draw. Needless to say I will be happy to return to some of my old stomping grounds.

To put perspective to how long its been, my son who is now 28 was too young to have a Utah permit, the last year we were there.

Have a great bowhunt. BB
