What units do you all think are best in the western part of the state. Any stories or pics from this general area

If your thinking private land, it is hard to beat the south western corner. Guilds, Broadbent, and others in the area have some awesome bucks, but you'll have to pony up some cash for a chance at them.

Here's my buck from up high in "H" several years ago. No monster but a nice buck from a DIY public land hunt.

i've been torn between hunting the wy peak area or in between the little grey and hoback and don't know how much pressure these areas get so i guess i well just wait and see what scouting brings this summer and go from there

The pressure that those areas you spoke of, get horrible amounts of pressure you will so more or as many hunters as you will bucks. Everybody says to go up the second week there is less people well with everyone saying that and going up the second week the presuure is just the same then as opening day. The deer herds are in bad shape in western wyoming the worst they have ever been. I am a resident and live in that area and I can get tags over the counter for that area and I dont even hunt there anymore.

How is the pressure during the archery part of the general tag season? I've been interested in trying that for deer in G or H.

Ya So i've been hearing. How about the wind rivers. Is there any other ranges you would suggest me to research i'm really running out of time. My in-laws live here but never seem to kill big bucks and that has been my passion for the past fiveyears and won't shoot anything under 170 so i'm prob rollin solo on this adventure.

I think the wind rivers are a wilderness area which means you have to have a guide to hunt them I could be wrong but I think they are. I used to hunt the greys with my father before the popeye craze and before Mike Eastman decided to us that deer herd to make his bank acount bigger. Things are alot differant now than they were then. After all the people moved into the greys and hoback I moved further north to hunt it was nice for awhile but soon there was people behind every tree. It still is a decent hunt in G and H if you prepare yourself for the massive amounts of people you will see and the steep country. Its just that there is to much BS for me to deal with in that area like having someone set up camp right in the middle of a basin that you scouted out bucks in all summerer. Also most people that hunt G or H are under the belief that there are huge deer every were and its not true, I search every inch of there winter range each year and I am lucky if I see a 200+ inch deer a year(havent seen one in two years) and 190 inch deer are few and far between with only a handfull of them seen a year. Even 180 inch bucks arent that common any more, The deer arent living long enough to reach there full potential most are getting shot when they are 2-4 years old and score in the 170's.

Well stated SSAKITAS. I could not agree more. Those areas are pounded and I just can't put myself to go there any more. Until the Wyoming Game and Fish decides to do something to build quality into what could be a crown jewel for our state, I won't go back. I quit going in 1997 and that was when the crowd Eastman got to go there really got started. I'm sure it is worse now than it was then. I'll pass on that experience.

From our experience, We went in several days before season opener, scouted the area, and i killed my buck in the same little pocket that my pard had seen him earlier. Yes the first day was a zoo, hard to believe that many people could be so far up and away from the trail head. And, hunters were coming over the ridge from the other side as well. After 2-3 days though, nobody around except us and the deer were again found out in the evenings and early mornings. My pard passed up lots of bucks, one was at least as good as mine because of an even bigger one that he was after. He finally took the little buck after almost 3 weeks on the mountain and it was time to come home.

All in all, if i were younger, not as busted up, and in better shape, i'd do that hunt again. It's very rough country unless you stay a bit lower, not a bad idea, and then it's mostly just steep. None of the other hunters we ran into were rude or inconsiderate, and like i said, during the middle of the week we had it to ourselves. I'd set up a hunt for the last part of the season. I'm sure it was better in the old days, so were a lot of places i know of, but i believe it's still a pretty good place to do a high country hunt in beautiful country.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-26-10 AT 08:36PM (MST)[p]Well i couldn't agree more. I'm originally from southeast idaho and have taken plenty of trophies 1 over 200 1 over 190 and three in the 180's i'm by no means new to the sport just never hunted outside of idaho until this year and i am now a wyoming resident so i can hunt the wilderness just wondering if i would be wasting time scouting that area? As for the damn eastman boys and bugle magazine they did the same thing to southeast idaho just not to the exstent they did with region g&h for wy. I don't know what they thought would happen when they published that my first thought the book was about to send a bunch of people that wanted toshoot a big buck but didn't have the patience, ambition, intuition, or plain and simple brains to kill or even find the big ones and would end up takin the small(future monsters) leaving the big ones to grow old and winter kill and the younger generation far and few. I myself would rather eat tag soup than a young buck my starting point is 170 to pull the trigger and the last two years i haven't even had an opportunity at one so something is seriously wrong.

I live in area H and usually buy a deer tag, but dont get excited at all about hunting in G or H, didn't go one day last year. It was great in the 80s right up until the winter 92, that and all the advertisment and promotion basicly did the deer hunting in. Your 20 years too late, and nothing can be done about it. The sad part is its such nice country.

knoxville471 there are some good bucks in H but not like there use to be and everyone is hunting the same areas. If you want to get away from the crowds I would try backpacking in Hobac. It's a good pack in and there is some really nice country to hunt. This area hasn't got much attention lately. In the past this area was known for monster bucks. There still are really good bucks in that area. quest

Well quest that is the plan One of my buddy's that i met in this last year hunted the hoback last year and shot a dinky maybe 130 buck from a two track somewere, so i figure me n him will hunt together, prob scout were he went only a whole lot farther in and stay a week or so and see if i can make a trophy huntin partner out of him. I think i will also scout the southern winds too seems like it may bein overlooked thanks for the advice

The Winds are not really trophy buck country.Never really has been known to be that. Not saying you couldn't find a hog there, just never really has been known for that.

Thats what i been hearing thanks for the info there nontypical i think i'm going to check out the hoback. If anything atleast i'll lose ten pounds

There are still a lot of great bucks around, but they aren't stupid. Here's a hint: if you are standing on top of some 10,000' peak, you're looking in the wrong place.

knoxville471 you need to get in there right above the tree line in Hoback. The genes are still there. If you have the energy and time you can hunt around the other sides. If they have logged in there don't over look that area. quest

Thanks quest and believe me i'll check it out and as of right now that is at the top of the list
