Did I put in for the correct unit?

I have 9 Utah LE deer points going into this year draws. In years past I have been putting in for the Bookcliffs LE rifle deer tag. After reading several posts and countless articles I decided that the Bookcliffs was not worth burning 9+ points on so I decided to switch to the Fillmore Oak Creek unit this year. I was feeling pretty good about the switch until this weekend when I was talking to a taxidermist who mentioned that the Oak Creek unit only produces bucks the same size of bucks as the Bookcliffs but the Books have 100 times the buck population. What are your thoughts? Is the Oak Creek unit the same caliber of unit as the Books or does the Oak Creek unit has better potential?

Sorry bud I think you blew it, Books is sweet, and have a better chance there... But hope you draw and kill a toad!

Oak Creek can produce some dandy bucks but they are few and far between. The Books hold alot more bucks and they are alot easier to find.

very good move, We can help you if needed. We have had good friends all with the tag the last 3 years. We have taken 4 bucks all over the 190 mark and one in the mid 200's. I sure both places have good bucks, but for my taste and my style, i think you made the right move. feel free to contact if needed. we have pretty good odds of having a few more guys down there with you this year if you draw.

you made the right decision if you want quality. the oak creek unit is a sleeper unit with huge bucks. put in the time and you wont regret it.

400BULL....ARE YOU A UTAH RESIDENT, IF NOT GETTING IN THE OAK/FILLMORE UNIT MIGHT BE A TAD TUFF. I HAVE 10 NON RES. POINTS & I DID APPLY FOR THE BOOKS....WONDERING IF I MADE A BAD MOVE. THE OTHER UNITS ARE ALMOST NOT DRAWABLE FOR ME AS THEY HAVE 1-3 NR TAGS AVAILABLE.....GOOD LUCK IN THE DRAW....YD.

Yukon,

I am a Utah resident. If I would have put in for the Books this year I probably would have been a shoe in this year. Where I put in for the Oak Creeks I could have another year or two before I finaly get into the max bonuse point pool.

Monarch,

Glad to hear that your hunting pool has had good success on the Oaks. I decide to switch to the Oaks inpart because I had a couple realitives that drew the unit two years ago and ended up comming home with 180 and 190 class bucks. If I do get lucky enough to draw the tag this year I will be sure to contact you for some help. Speaking of help I have plans to scout the unit several times this summer if I do or do not draw the tag. Could you PM me a couple areas that you would suggest looking over to get me started?

Thanks

Good move on the switch. I think if your in the shape the mt. has to offer you can find the buck your after. This is a great sleeper for those willing to do the time. granted it dosent have the populations the books has. both you would have a good hunt. Sure wish I had the points under my name.

I'm glad you are getting some good feedback about the Unit. From what I have heard here, and previously, I think you will have about the same chance of harvesting a 180"+ buck. The biggest difference is that at the Books you tend to see hundreds of other bucks (And Hunters), where you mostly won't at Oak Creek. I hope you get lucky and draw it... I'm just 1 point behind the crawl for the Books. But we have hunted there previously and seen 180"+ bucks. I may draw this year, but more likely I will next year... Maybe by then I'll be considering Oak Creek too though. LOL
