Look for lightly used if you have to.

I got a Leica for around $900 brand new last year. Keep your eyes open on the net for a great deal. I'd rather spend $600 to $1k on a used Swarovski or Leica than the same price on less quality glass!

Worst thing about less expensive scopes is the eyepiece. Those tiny little eyepeices can give you a headache faster than an anvil being dropped on your head. Gotta watch that.

Secondly, think ANGLED. They take some getting used to but once you get the hang of it, they are much more comfortable to look through and you don't have to get them up so high, which makes them more steady.

I would recommend the Vortex Nomad. I have the angled and I love it. Before I bought it I compared it side by side to a Carl Zeiss and really couldn't tell much of a difference. I am sure the top dollar scopes are going to perform a little better in very low light conditions, but I don't think you can go wrong with the Nomad. It is easy to pack and still has the power to glass up anything in hiking distance.

If you are not gonna go with one of the big 3 then I would look at Vortex. I got my son one and am very pleased witht he investment and return
