I lucked out and drew a tag at the expo this year for a muzzloader Books. I have searched the archives and talked with a dozen folks that have hunted the rifle tag in years past. My question is since the tag is for the end of Sept/first of October are the deer still up high? And is the wilderness or the deep and steep canyons off the top worth the extra effort this time of year for a better buck? I understand I am going to have plenty of little bucks to sift through!

It depends alot on the weather. Mostly on the muzz hunt they are migrating. Hard to pattern a buck and kill it. Some years for the muzz have been warm enough to hold them on top but most of the time they are in the thickest hardest to hunt part. Ya its always worth the extra effort for a bigger buck!!

justr,
Thanks for the reply. I definatly understand the effort part, which is why I ask these questions. I don't want to make scouting trips looking at summer range patterns if the deer will not be in the same area's. If enough people believe what you say is true, I think my time will be better spent going down a few days early and scouting before the opener instead of making summer time trips.

Congrats on the expo tag! Seems like everyone I know draws those damn things besides me. Just another donation/ tax right off again :s I've guided the books for the last 5 years including 7 hunts last year for all three seasons and I would say focus on the tops for the muzzy hunt. Every buck we chased during the archery hunt stayed put until the 2nd week of the rifle hunt. The roadless held some good bucks if u could get in far enough and close to the indian land. Stay high, glass far, and get off the main highway every truck and atv uses and ull turn up a good one. The two we got on the muzzy hunt were 178" and 189" Looking forward to seeing the pics this fall. Good luck!

Hunted the Muzzy on the Books in 2006. Stay on the tops and towards the lower end of the unit. Would be glad to give you some specific areas to look for. PM me and I will go into details.

Agreed. teh only thing i would add to this post is that it is without a doubt in my mind the BEST hunt on the book cliffs. You absolutely should see deer in the 170/180's, and a chance to see a 190 class. Best book hunt in my opinion

As far as scouting for a buck. You should plan atleast 1 weekend trip to see what the average buck is and what you can expect. Who knows you might get lucky enough to find a hog and check back in on him during the hunt. If its warm he should still be there but don't bank on it. It might give you some direction on a drainage to concentrate on so you don't go in blind.

Summer trip will still be worth it.Even if it so you can learn the road systems and find a good camp areas.
