Washington muleys?

I need advice from some Washington hunters. I have been putting in for the "desert a" hunt for a while and don't expect to be drawn any time soon. I normally hunt muleys in naneum, but last year a wildlife officer told me the mule deer population is not doing well in the colockum area.

Where would be a good place to try this upcoming year? I hunt during modern firearm season. Definitely open to suggestions.

I LIVE AT THE MOUTH OF THE NANEUM AND THERE ARE NO BUCKS LEFT DUE TO LACK OF PREDATOR CONTROL (CATS) THANKS TO GAME DEPT. AND THE DRAW SYSTEM FOR A CAT TAGS KNOW. THE LATE DRAW BUCK TAG HAS NOT HELP THIS UNIT EITHER.i WOULD LOVE TO SEE THIS UNIT COMPLETLY CLOSED FOR A YEAR OR TWO AND THEN MANAGED PROPERLY.ON THAT NOTE HEAD FOR THE OKANOGAN AND BACK PACK IN TO THE BACK COUNTY.

There a some big bucks in Washington if you know where to go. Here are a few units to checkout Broberts. Alta, Entiat, Slide Ridge. All these units are good.

I wouldn't waste your time in the blues. I have spent some time down there elk hunting and scouting the last few years and haven't seen much for deer. I was on public though. If you have access to private it might be different. Good luck. And if you want more or better info send me a pm.

broberts,

There is no better reward than doing some homework and finding an area that holds deer. I will layout some tips that you could use to find some good hunting areas in Washington.

1) Look at the hunter success for the units of interest.
2) Look at public land maps or go ask for permission to hunt private land in the off-season.
3) Use Google Earth or WDFW's GoHunt mapping software to find spots that look good.
4) Call the WDFW Biologist for that area and ask them questions (may not be a huge help, depending on area)
5) Go on a few scouting trips during the late summer and see what kind of bucks the area has to offer.

All of the 200 units,300 units north of US 12, and the 100 units in the NE corner have good mule deer habitat.

Thanks for the great info guys. I will check into it. I have hunted alta. Saw a bunch of deer, but I also saw more hunters than I have ever seen in my life. A veritable sea of blaze orange. Need a map and a pack so I can get further away from the pack, ey?

Tabletop Mountain in Naneum is where my family has been going for 40+ years. I have a bunch of good memories there. My uncles still go there so I like to take my eldest daughter and meet up with them. But the deer are gone, and have been for quite a while. Deer season has turned into elk scouting (of which there are plenty) for me.

I am a carpenter and the economy sucks. Unforunately, no out of state hunting for me at the moment.

try along the yakima river canyon between Ellensburg and Yakima. East side of the canyon. When I lived there the hunting was good with several wide bucks spotted each year. Just an idea. It's been a long while since I last scouted down there.
