This certainly isn't the greatest photo or the biggest buck, but its a great memory in my mind of a night I long remember and thanks to my camera I captured some of it.

It happened on the Monday evening after the opening of the Utah archery season in 2007. I was sitting a waterhole, watching and photographing a couple of bull moose when this buck came and tried to water, but the bull moose would not allow it to water. I knew I could never get rid of my camera and pick up my bow with the buck almost facing me straight on, so I just took a few photos as I waited for the right opportunity. But each time the buck headed towards the water, the moose would scare him. Finally the buck realized he was not going to get a drink and started to leave. I grabbed my bow and low and behold the buck stopped about 20 yards away with his eyes hidden behind a branch but his bull body was exposed. I arrowed him, waited about an hour and found him about 80 yards away.

Here are couple photos I took that night of a velvet buck.
It's kind of like the before and after photos.

This is the buck we named Wide Load last year that I later killed. He was young but too cool to pass.

Went back on opening morning. Lucky for me he liked the area. He wasn't very far from the previous weekend.

I had a lot of help on both hunts. Thanks to the AntlerFest guys. I hope to re-enact it again this year. Last year I was dry as a bone, except for this big nasty. Yummy!

Back in 2004 I hiked up to a small waterhole, the day before the archery elk season opened up, just to check and see if any elk were using it.

Not long after daylight, this three point came in for a quick drink from the small pond, by where I was sitting. So I took a few photos of him, then decided to try shoot him and as he turned to leave, I set my camera down, picked up my bow and arrowed him.

These are the before and after photos of that velvet buck. It was this incident that now makes me try to take a before and after photo of the critters I try to take with my bow. It just adds a little more challenge to the already tough equation, but is very satisfying when you can achieve it.

In 2007, after I had already taken my buck, (see photo above)while I was hunting elk, I had these three different bucks, all within good bow range, so I just took their photo.
