On the Idaho Deer Controlled Hunt Harvest Survey it has a column for the % of hunters who harvested, the percent who killed 4+pt and the percent who killed 5+pt.

At first I thought the column for 5+pt was for whitetails but even in the units where whitetails aren't killed there are some that have a very high % of 5+pt success. Are there really that many bucks being killed with cheaters or are they counting brow tines or what?

I would say browtines, but what units you looking at some units alot of bucks dont have browtines...they dont make it long enough.

hunters are the ones that turn in that information so fish and game wont know the answer to that. on the harvest report it asks how many points it has on the left and then on the right. i would count anything that is scorable.

The last buck that I taken in Idaho was a 4X4 that had eye guards one was 2 1/2 inches and other one was 2 1/4 inches.Every one that looked at it called a 5X5 but at the check station the Fish $ Game said it was a 4X4 and they do not count eye guards. Now they may have change there mines to help get more out of state hunters to come to Idaho thinking they have more big bucks running the hills. Its all for the big $$$$$$$

I know when I fill mine out I dont count the eyegaurds, but I am sure alot of people do which would account for the numbers. Boone and Crocket counts them so who is to say who is right. It is a little confusing and can make numbers look better than they are. I am sure alot of three points with his as eyegaurds are counted as four points. I wish they would clarify this as well.

Why the heck wouldn't you can't browtines? B&C does. I have a Muley with 3.5" brows. Damn straight they're getting counted...

The way this was explained to me is that the 5+pts is the F&G attempt to say what percentage of the bucks taken are non-typ. Since anything over 4 points is technically non-typ.

Keep in mind it doesn't really matter since the harvest reporting is done by the hunter and not the F&G. I've met guys who say they always fill out their harvest report stating that they did not harvest even if they did. And I've met guys put 10 points on the left and 10 points on the right even if they shoot a 2 point just for shits and giggles.

If you really want to know the trophy quality look at the odds of draw. If its hard to draw there are probably some good bucks there.

The people who do the surveys arent even biologists, they are interns employed by the fish and game just for this reason. I had to explain to one guy 3 times i had an extra whitetail doe tag only thing i harvisted said that 3 times, he kept asking how many points the antlers had. I didnt think about that when i replied on my previous post.

I think these numbers come from the surveys that are turned in by hunters. Even though eyegaurds are points I think for the purpose of the survey they should be excluded as it gets confusing because a little three point goes in the same catagory as a 28" four point with no eyegaurds. It really doesnt tell you trophy quality anyway as four points come in so many shapes and sizes. A 195" 4x4 will look the same on paper as a 16" 100" class four point. I agree with the comment that if there are alot of applicants for a hunt then there are probably some quality animals there.

RE: ID %4 pt and %5 pt

If you hunt in a 2 point or 4 point only unit brow tines don't count. No one knows what people are putting down for points.Just take those numbers with a little salt:)

RE: ID %4 pt and %5 pt

That is why I pay no attention to the %4 pt and %5 pt numbers they post on their website. Everyone has a different opinion on how to count antler points, plus it doesn't reeally indicate maturity of an animal. A 4 pt could be a 120" 4x4 or a 190" B&C buck - who knows.
