I need help mounting the scull to the board . What is the best way ? I was told to drill a hole in the back part of the scull and put a screw in it to the board .
Can someone post up a picture how they mounted theirs to a board.
Thanks

I have always just drilled and screwed them to fasten them....Holds well unless you plan on playing catch with it...

You can use a dry-wall molly. The kind that butterflies out. Just be careful not to tighten the bolt too far too avoid cracking bone.

My Taxidermist just used 3 long wood screws to hold mine on the plaque. Hope that helps.

Right underneath the brain canal you will see where the vertebrae connects. It will have two bumps, one on each side. In the middle is the thickest part, this is where you will want to drill. Also, when tightening your screw, be sure everything is lined up as the teeth will make impressions in the wood and will also scratch if you turn the skull. I personally only use the one screw in the top of the skull and have found this to be sufficient. I figure another screw into the roof of the mouth will just create another opportunity for fragile bone to break, along with showing a screw when viewed from a side angle.

I made a couple of plaques that could either sit on a desk top or mount to a wall. They have a center piece which makes them sit at a 45 degree angle. I put a wooden dowel at the top and the hole in the skull fits on their perfectly.

The reason I like this design is that it makes it very easy to switch out skulls from time to time.

Here is an example of an elk on the wall and my boys first buck on the mantle. Easy to switch out and holds very well. Would take a large earthquake to get em to come down (and then I think any of them would). Hope this helps!

+1 Gudari
I actually use a pilot hole to make sure it doesn't split apart when I put the screw in from the back of the plaque into the skull.

I did a euro on my son's bull and I used bondo to hold a small 2x2 block in the brain cavity. It worked great, I got the idea from this site last year. I like the idea of the wooden dowel, so that you can switch out your mounts...

That is a very cool way to mount one. Can you share more specifics on how you did it? How did you connect the skull to the horn (just drill and screw?)? How did you mount the horn to the wall?

Thanks for any pointers.

Thanks alot of good ideas and good looking mounts. I guess I will get a few white screws and go for it. This is a little three point my daughter shot. I am going to mount it up for here to put in her room.
Thanks John

if it's not too late, I use a 5/16 piece of all thread, drill up though the flat thick part where the spine hooks to the base of the skull,(between the two bumps), slip the all thread up through the hole, and put a nut on it inside the brain cavity, and one on the bottom of the skull, trim the all thead long enough to reach through your board for a nut to hold it on the back side,,,,one other idea is to cover the bottomof the teeth with a thin coat of hot glue where the teeth meet the plaque,,, this will keep them from scratching the wood... also fill the brain cavity with paper mache after you get the bolt in. this will seal off that area from critters wanting a new home.

Hey check out my wifes buck she got last year. Get a horn realative in size. Take a lag bolt drill a hole through the horn and skull one size smaller than lag bolt. drill a counter sink hole for the lag bolt. Use a screw next to the lag bolt to help secure the head to the horn for no movement. Little bucks look pretty cool this way too.

Ok thanks for the picture. I was thinking I needed to drill down from the top of the scull. Now I am going in the right direction. ;)

i take i off the wall every so often and it seems to be holding up. that was my first time doing a euro myself hence the busted up nasals.

Don't put screws into bone. Bone is brittle. Bondo a piece of wood into the skull cavity, and sink your screws into that instead.
