I attended the meeting in Afton the other night. I didn't know what to expect when I arrived but I have to say I was quite impressed at how it went. The meeting was the first of 3 meetings they are going to do for the Wyoming Range Mule Deer Herd. The purpose of this first meeting was to get the public (range residents, residents, outfitters and non-residents) to let the WFGD know what they think are the major issues affecting the Wyoming Range Mule Deer. We actually got to break up into smaller groups and put the ideas down on paper. Some of the major issues were the condition of the winter range, too much hunting pressure, oil/gas exploration and destruction of the winter range, too many different opening and closing dates on the units in Region G, and the abuse of OHVs.
The WFGD is going to take these ideas, do some research and then come back for the second round of meetings in late August to discuss the data they have collected. I guess the main goal is to come up with a publicly supported mule deer plan
I think it is great that something has got started. I think folks are starting to recognize that something is broken and needs to be fixed.
