I drew 45 rifle!!!
Hey guys im going to be a sophomor at the University of Idaho next fall. I plan on taking as much of the season off as i need. I want to start scouting now and I was just wondering if anyone has any suggestions? I dont want your "honey hole", I love to scout. Any advice on this unit is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I drew the Archery Elk tag this year. Where do you live? Maybe we could hook up and ride together or atleast compare notes.

Let me start by saying you suck, after that i hope you can sleep til opening day, My brother drew in 04, and my dad in 06....if my brother is willing to share info pm him tworivers....Or look on the idaho preference points see if steve alderman will give you some tips.

Hey a good buddy of mine drew that tag this year as well. Ive spent a good amount of time in that unit the last couple of years and have seen some real big bucks. I have covered some of the same ground as the lowland muley crew. Id also like to learn more about the unit as well. Thanks

Start judging bucks now, I have seen alot of bucks over there, be picky...my brother didnt even carry rounds first couple days. Dont be suprised to see 30 inch 3 points. If you dont shoot something close to 200 somethings wrong or your mighty picky

>If you dont
>shoot something close to 200
>somethings wrong or your mighty
>picky

That is a pretty bold statement. Did your brother and dad both kill deer at or above 200"? I bet there are a whole lot more 160-180 deer killed on this hunt than you might think. Whether its someone miss judging a buck running away or settling on the last day.

Good luck on the hunt kid, It's a great a hunt with great potential, but don't expect to see 200" bucks running all over the place.

I wouldnt go into this hunt expecting to shoot let alone see a 200in buck. Ive covered a lot of ground in that unit and have worn out a couple of pairs of boots and have only seen a few 200 inchers over the years. Theres a lot of good bucks out there. Locate your buck in the next month or so and keep track of him. It will make it a whole lot easier.

We have plenty of info that we would love to share with you or help out anyway we can. We live right here in the middle of the unit. Send us a pm we have lots of pics. and we scout every day.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-30-10 AT 05:25PM (MST)[p]Start by finding the public land unless you have access to private in there. Cover all of it. Get help from others but do a bunch of your own scouting elsewhere at the same time.

I had the tag in 07, if you need a few places to check, i'd be willing to point you in a direction to head, i didn't bother scouting till the muzzleloader season was halfway through, only hunted weekends and still harvested a buck over 200". Do not! overlook the low country. And be carefull of 30" forkeys too lol.

nope my brother was getting to the end the hunt and shot a buck misjudged it, looks like it scores more then it does...and my dad hadnt hunted since 1986 and had polio when he was 8 hes pretty crippled up but we do have 18 mins of him shooting at a 180-185 buck all around him. My brothers friend drew last year has shot multiple 190 + and he did pass on a 195 buck, he wanted a monster. Like said be aware for 30 inch forkies, or 3 points. I have put alot of boot in that country too, unless it went to hell in the last 2 years the 200 bucks are there, they maybe on private land. When my brother drew there was a buck that was 36 inches wide well into the 210-220s but he stayed on private land. What about the muzzleloader buck shot last year that was over 200?

LAST EDITED ON Jul-01-10 AT 01:02PM (MST)[p]Scott,

There were four bucks over 200 harvest last year! But when you take in to effect that there were over 250 tag holders that is not very good odds. Not everybody should or will hold out for a 200 incher. Most people will shoot the first nice four point they see. Heck, I even offered to help a kid pack out a forkie that he had harvested two miles from the nearest road. The kid was tickled to death with his deer! Nobody said the 200 inchers weren't there, they are state wide if you are lucky enough to stumble across one (or do your homework)! Two that I know of, came out of 39 last year.

Goose,

You just got plane lucky on your deer, Congrats! I much rather be lucky than good any day! Would love to see a picture or your 200+ incher.

You guys just shouldn't make it sound like anybody and everybody shoots 200 inchers down there. It's very misleading and disappointing to the majority of guys who don't shoot one or dont even see a buck over 170. Thats all were saying!

Best Regards

Steve

Steve,
4 bucks over 200, are you including Jake's buck? I couldn't remember if it was over 200"

Yoyak,

That does not include Jakes buck! His was under the 200 inch mark!

Steve,

not getting anyones hopes up, when i had that hunt it was the funnest hunt i've been on, we would see upwards of 40 different bucks per day, alot of nice four points 24-26", saw one bigger than mine but got dark before we could get close and couldn't find him the next day. Alot of country to cover out there, I drew 14 this year so hopefully find another nice buck. Oh and he grossed 196 typ, and 207 non, never had him netted cuz he wouldn't do worth a darn.

Goose, that is an incredible buck. Gotta be one of the best looking bucks I've seen. Congrats on him, beutiful mount as well.

If I had the tag, 190 would be my goal. But the reality is, anything around 180 would likely hit the dirt. I've seen some monsters out there. But it's been awhile and from what I hear it ain't what it once was.........Like everywhere else.

Thanks Steve, i didnt know how many had been harvested that was over 200. I just know they are in there. My close to 200 includes anything over 180. I am kinda just jealous cause i have missed this tag 2 times. If there is a message out there listen to your older brother, when he tells you to put in. I also realize that they have split 45 from what it was in 2006 the hunting area, and the wilderness area they made no travel on bennett mountain. Heck i am dreaming about my wyoming hunt. Its months away.

Aaron,

I ruined that unit years ago! You should try 13, I haven't spent much time there. I've had a couple budies harvest two bucks over 225 in the last couple years. All kiddin aside I haven't spent anytime in 14. Sorry! The part about my buddies and 13 is true however.

Best Regards

Steve

Hey thanks for the help guys. I PM'd a couple of you. Im really looking forward to this hunt. October cant get here fast enough!!

Region K steve, never hunted out of state, and have never shot anything bigger then a 3 point. I was too busy shooting at iraqis....hope to shoot a decent buck and maybe buy a leftover antelope

Yesterday my little brother Scott aka Huntnfever passed away.... I wanted to thank you guys for treating him with respect.. and listening to him.... For the guys who have this tag... hunt hard, and when you harvest please take a moment and remember a veteran who loved the country, hunting and the State of Idaho. I don't mean to hijack this thread... I don't even know what to say.. He was so excited to go hunt Wyoming. He loved the campfire section here on Monstermuleys.. Thank you all.
