If you apply for a pref point as first choice and apply for a second choice tag does the 2nd choice use your already accumulated points in the draw. And if you draw do you still get the point for your first choice to use next year?

LAST EDITED ON Mar-14-07 AT 09:04PM (MST)[p]Let me get this straight i have 3 pref points. So if i put in first choice pref point and second choice 3rd season xx-unit. I will be in the draw with 3 pref points and if i draw have one point for next year.

Has this changed since last year.

I guess I am not sure what you are asking?

I understand if you put a PP first choice, the for a hunt second, if you draw the second choice hunt you will get the tag and a 4th point for 08.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but this is how I understand it. Second choice will not use your points.

Diesel,

If you draw a tag as a second choice you gain a preference point and get to hunt.

If you have 3 preference points this year and put in for a preference point as your first choice, you will have 4 points after the draw regardless of what you put for your second choice and irregardless of whether you draw the tag as a second choice.

HOWEVER, you will ONLY draw a tag as a second choice if there are leftover tags after all the first choice tags are allocated. Your preferece points do not affect your ability to draw a second choice tag.

Hope that answers your questions

To expand a little on what tx said, you cannot draw a tag that requires 3 points as a second choice and still get a point for next year. Its all or nothing.

It's Bush's fault!!!

ok thanks tx i think that is what i was looking for. The only thing that confused me in the deer and elk book it just said you could put pref first and a hunt second but when i read the sheep and goat book it said that pref point first and then it stated that the 2nd choice would not use points. It is just worded different between the two books that is what threw me off.

When drawing for the second choice tags, is it just an equal drawing where everyone has one chance? Do people that have preferance points have any advantage over people who do hot?

LAST EDITED ON Mar-15-07 AT 12:51PM (MST)[p]Second choice tags are issued only after everyone who correctly applied for a first choice drew their tags. Obviously the people with higher numbers of preference points will draw first. If there are tags that weren't allocated to first choice applications they will be allocated to 2nd choice and so on. If, after all of this process, the tags are not allocated then they become "leftover' licenses and can be bought at a later time.

If you don't want to spend the $25 on a preference point put in for a unit, as first choice, that you have no chance of drawing.
Like unit 201 for elk. If the computer screws up and gives you a tag for that then you had better go hunt it.

If I bought an over the counter elk tag in 2006 and want to apply for deer and elk points for this year, do I have to pay $25 for the deer this year but not the elk point? Or does the elk license I bought count as a big game license for both preference points? Hope I made that clear enough. Thanks.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe you can apply for any hunts if you choose a preference point as your first choice. You don't loose your points if you draw a second choice, but you can't apply for a second choice if PP is your first choice.

Question? I did not have a license last year, will be charged $25 per species to keep the points going this year or will I be charge $25 once for all species?

LAST EDITED ON Mar-18-07 AT 06:30AM (MST)[p]Smokepole, that are NOT correct. You may apply for a preference point as your first choice, and you may still apply for a tag as your second choice.

Example: you have 1 PP, and you apply for a PP as your first option and a tag in an undersubscribed unit as your second choice. If you get your second choice, you now have 2 PP's and a tag to hunt!

Bowedark: You are assesed the $25 PER SPECIES. However, in the example above, you would get an addtional PP, get a tag, and NOT pay the $25 for the point since you get a tag on your second choice. You are assessed the charge if you didn't get a license last year and don't draw one this year.

Thanks txhunter58, I must have been thinking of Arizona. I'm torn, I have 8 points in CO, don't have much vacation, and have some pretty sure draws in the works. I think it would be safer to just apply for the point.

If you put in for a deer PP only, do they charge the full amount? ($300 non-res + app fee) Or do they charge you the app-fee + $25 species point fee?

IF you apply only for a preference point, you get charged the full tag fee + $3 application fee + $0.25 search and rescue. If this year tag is $300, the you are charged $303.25. After the drawing, they refund ALL but $3 if you don't pay the PP fee or all but $3 + $25 if you do owe for the preference point.
