LAST EDITED ON Jul-05-10 AT 02:22PM (MST)[p]Hello,
I'm new at this and never posted before.
I drew a 3rd season deer tag for 61 and was planning on going unguided and hunting on foot. A couple of different guys who've hunted the area said I would be severely limiting myself if I didn't bring an ATV. I've never seen the area and was wondering what some of you who have been there before think. I could probably borrow or rent one, but I'm not a big fan of them. I like hunting on foot.

huge unit, 2 track into some areas are a good idea (only 2 track), unit's bottom half Is vast with a lot of access to areas to hunt on foot (jeep) works well. As for the atv it would also work great to get into the areas then hunt on foot. great hunt good luck.

A four wheeler would be a huge advantage in this unit.It would also save on gas and wear and tear on your pickup.Their are lots of roads that are accesable for wheelers. You can also get around much quicker on the wheeler vs pickup due to the roughness of the roads. One word of advice is to take a good pair of gogles as the dust is usually real bad.Good luck on your hunt you have a great tag, hold out for a good one!!

Hey M.D.

Just curious how many points it took to draw??? res or non-res? I knew some Calif. guys who had a great hunt in 2006. I know that both of them took ATV's.

Good Luck!

Thank you guys for the advice. It took 9 non-res points to draw this hunt. I'm from the mid-west where there is a lot of corn and soybeans so I'm very excited about this hunt in different terrain. I've hunted a lot but I've never taken a big mule deer. A 140 class buck from N.E. Montana is my best so far. Even if I don't get one, I'm still looking forward to the opportunity to hunt there.

Congrats on drawing a tag! If there is early snow, you might want to check high for deer but if not seeing anything much, head to the southwest part of the unit! They sometimes will move down toward the cedars and sage! Good luck! Unit 61 is a great unit! Hunt hard and start early each day and hunt till dark . Get off the main road half mile or more and you will see very few hunters in that unit. Good luck!
