I drew the 101-1 deer hunt. Planning on hunting the last week of the season. Anybody out there with any advice on the unit? Any pics? Would be happy to share info about SE Idaho/NE Nevada.
Thanks!

In my opinion you picked the best time to hunt that unit, there are some great deer out there. I was out there scoutin for elk this mornin and seen a couple good bucks. The weather around here in the last week of oct. will usualy make the bucks start sniffin. will you be out here to scout at all?

I saw a great bull in that unit while hunting antelope in 2008. I also saw a group of five bucks but they were not very big. PM me if you want.

I will make it out there at least once for a couple days. I live in eastern Idaho so its not that far, just lots of other irons in the fire.

Thanks for the info! I also drew 101 deer. I don't know much about the area, other then via google earth and topo maps. This will be my first time hunting a desert type hunt but I am excited for this hunt! I'm having a tough time trying to find out much info on this hunt. Some of my questions are; is it mostly a resident population of deer? What kind of expectations can a guy have while hunting this unit, trophy wise? I plan on doing some scouting in the area in a few weeks, I'm looking for a general area in the unit that will get me started on finding some deer?

steepandeep, the whole herd is resident deer. I know there are 180 plus bucks in 101, if you want to contact me i could give you some good starting points were i have seen great bucks in the past. Are you interested in archery hunting the unit?

Thanks Cameron, that's what I wanted to hear! If time permits(between my utah archery hunts), I would really like to try my luck with my bow and I could do some good scouting at the same time. That would be great if I could contact you some how and gain a little more info, from your knowledge of the area?

Thanks -Paul

I hunted that unit a couple of times in the 80's and it was real good back then. Good Luck.

I hunted it in 2002 and it was the 2nd worst hunt I've ever been on. I've never seen an area so over run with vehicles and vehicle tracks. People were driving pickups, ATV's motorcyclyes and anything they could EVERYWHERE. I scouted three times and saw a few solid bucks. Come archery season, some guys came in and set up a big camp right in the middle of the best area I had seen. Trailers, campers and vehicles all over. And then it went downhill..........

I'd forget the areas that are close to any road - and there are plenty of roads. If I ever went back, I would go to some obscure, off-the-beaten path area that most hunters would not look at. Instead of scouting for the deer, I would spend my time looking for some of those hidey-hole areas now. The deer will definitely not be in the same places in October that they are in now. At least the big old bucks will mostly move out of any likely area. Their opportunity to survive is just not good in most of that country. The big guys will go nocturnal and move to more secluded spots.
