Pauns Management 2010

Hey Pauns Hunters,

My dad drew the Pauns management hunt this year. He hunted the rifle Pauns in 1991 and came away empty handed. I had to sell pretty hard to convince him to jump to the management hunt, so want to be sure to get him on a good buck. He's got a little age on him so this is likely his last good deer hunt.

Any advice?

I think just covering lots of ground is the trick. There are migration routes that you could watch. Last year, right near the end of the hunt, the deer were arriving on the winter range down around the border. Once they get there, you can just cover ground and look over many deer.
Migration routes early in the hunt and winter range areas later. That's what I'd do.

70% of the bucks on that unit are management bucks in my opinion. You will have no difficulty getting into them. My mom saw tons of bucks last year with the rifle tag and took a management buck the last day for jerky.

Thanks for the info Brian. We're going to be down there in a couple weeks getting getting familiar with the migration routes and the winter range. I've had a couple folks point me to a couple main routes. Are there particular routes you'd suggest we put the most focus?

THanks again for the help.

Thanks for the info Dillon. I've heard that the number of management bucks is really high. We've got a goal to find a 26"+ mgmt buck. I've seen a couple that came off the hunt last year in that range.

Find a good trail through the ledges. There's only a few spots the deer can get down and you can sit and watch and see lots of deer. I will talk to my father in law and ask him for some directions to a good one. He used to patrol it before his promotion.
