Sonoran Hunts

Even with the trouble in Mexico, I still want to go to Sonora Hermosilla for desert mule deer. Who are the best 3 guides down there?

If not sonora where would you guys recommend going for big time mule deer? Canada? Utah? Indian Reservation?

Thanks
Dave

If it was a once in a lifetime deal for me, I would not choose Mexico based on what I know. It's too hit and miss and alot of hunters come home unhappy. I don't know where I'd say the #1 place to go would be, but Mexico wouldn't be #1 in my books.

I have also been looking around. From the people I know who have been to mexico, 100% of them say don't waste your money. I have been looking at outfitters in Canada, Wyoming, and Colorado. Still have been unable to find the one I want to book with. I am not much help for you other than I say avoid Mexico.

That John Denver is full of $#!t man

I've been to Mexico 4 years straight, and have done a lot of research.
If money were no object I would hunt with Thomas Baker.I think he's got a heck of a ranch and some real bruiser bucks on it. It's in one of the most dangerous areas in Sonora though, so good luck. I think he's around $12,000 give or take a grand.

You could kill a big buck with any outfitter in Mexico, but most guys don't get a big one every time. Out of my 4 years I have killed 3 deer. One of them was a 3x4 29" wide. 175
One was a 30" 180" 4x4, and one was a 201" 26" 7x7.
The last year I went I passed a 186" buck the first day that one of my hunting buddies killed immediately after I passed. It was the largest deer seen or taken by 4 of us this year.
I've never seen a deer larger than the ones I killed either. No big ones got away. I killed the biggest deer I saw every year except this year and I should have shot it, but I was hoping to get another 200" buck.

Mexico is fun, and the bucks are there, but you have to weigh the risk factor in to the equation. Is it worth risking your life to hunt deer? It might be for some, and not for others. My outfitter's partner was killed in May this year about 20 miles from the ranch we hunted in January. He wasn't hunting deer obviously, but he's dead just the same. Am I going to Mexico this year? Maybe. Maybe not. Have to see when it gets a little closer to winter.

If I could hunt deer anywhere and have a chance at a 200" buck, it would be with Wade Heaton on the Alton CWMU. I live near it, and I've hunted deer all over the west and there is not a property anywhere that compares to it. More deer, and more big bucks than anywhere, period. His bucks will typically be between 185" and 215" gross. Lot of them at or near 200". I've mounted probably near a hundred of the bucks taken off his ranch over the last 16 years and it's pretty consistent. Occasionally he'll take a 220-230" buck, but it's not every year.
Get on the waiting list and be prepared to pay around $20k

If I wanted to do it without a guide, I'd buy the best Colorado voucher I could and go hunt big deer. Co has some dandy bucks in most units.

I might rather hunt the limited units in Utah if I had the money. Pauns, Books, San Juan, Dolores, or Oak Creek. Any of those units will produce what you want.

Good luck,

My top picks would be the Jicarilla Rez NM or Heaton ranch Southern UT both will put you on 200" deer.

"I have found if you go the extra mile it's Never crowded".

Wow there is a lot of negative coming from Sonora.

As for Heaton and the Jic, I thought $10,OOO for a mule deer hunt was a lot cash. They are in the $15k

Well I sent notes to Heaton Ranch and to the Jicarillo. It looks like you had to apply for permits at the Jicarilla back in May.

What else you recommend? Once in a lifetime.
