Just out of curiosity how have you hunters, who've hunted mule deer around the Featherville area, done the past 5 years?

I'm not looking for help or advice. I've spent my time up there and just want to know what others guys, or gals think of the amount and quality of deer.

My thanks to those who reply.

The deer move out a lot earlier than they used to. Most guys shoot small deer, and there are WAY too many hunters. Ron

my family used to have a cabin between pine and featherville, when i was a kid. it was actually on grouse creek. i decided to get back up there a few years ago and do some hunting. yes, there are a lot of people up there, but you will tend to find them very close to trails and roads. that country is steep. if you get away from the trails, you will not run into many people, if any. i glassed the biggest buck ive EVER seen up around grouse butte. well over 30"...we actually put him about 35"...and he was a typical 4. too bad it was about 2 weeks before the opener. never saw him again. i did manage a nice 4 pt. though. i dont care what people say, there are still huge bucks in that country. but yes, they move out quickly. the reason people shoot smaller bucks, is they dont get their lazy butts in the country where the toads are:) you cant really blame them. once you do it a few times, you start wondering what the hell is wrong with you!!

The migration goes right through there. The big bucks typically come through last.
Hunt late.

i will agree i missed the 4 biggest bucks ive had an chance at up on grouse creek sad thing is they were right off the main road all were in a group in oct dunno why but they were can you say i had a sudden fever
will be back up there this year first time in years im hoping all our old spots still hold up
true most poeple just run the roads or withen a mile of them ive noticed

ive never done it, but ive heard some guys have pretty good success coming down and going up the lime creek drainage.....just make sure you're on the right side!!!

Thanks for responding guys.

Sounds like a few of you have been in my general area but last year I moved out of the Grouse Creek and Lime Creek area. Found a new spot nearby that holds good deer and NO sign of humans.

Felt like a lottery winner. Good luck to everyone this coming season.

I hunted there a few years ago, had the best season of my life without getting anything, if that makes any sense. Rolled a quad off of Grouse Butte learned not to do that, came back the next week and missed the biggest deer I'd seen to that time, chased deer all over and seen good bucks 4 days in a row. All missed opportunities were due to my own impatience (I learned alot that year!!!). One mistake to take into consideration is that there are trails all over Grouse Butte and Deer Mountain that quads and motorcycles roll up and down all day long. I hiked in from the backside and got in place about 2 hours before daylight only to hear the motorcycles on the other side. Best advice is to get away from the roads, the people, and the ATV trails that I tried to ride!!! Good luck, have a safe season!!

there are a couple different routes to get your wheeler up to grouse butte. they are both steep and nasty as hell!! the main trail is nothing but rock and loose shale too. i know youre not the first to roll up there, and wont be the last.
