Just thought I would share a few pics from my hunt this year. Got lucky and drew a premium archery tag. We spent eight days in the field chasing decent bucks but never found the one I was looking for till Sunday 8/29. 65 yard shot and my hunt was over. The buck is 28" wide and by far my biggest to date. We still have one more tag to fill so cant wait to get back down this weekend. I know you guys are going to tear me apart for the shot but oh well it got it done and super excited about my buck. Some great camping and even better surroundings.

Great buck! Congratulations. As for the shot, I'm sure if your buck had to choose where to be shot, that would be where he would have chosen. If anyone gives you a hard time, who cares. I appreciate you posting your awesome buck.

Well im in the process of trying to get it mounted. I was told I cut the cape a little short and it would be difficult to patch the hole in the forehead (made me sick). Personally I think it would be kind of cool to leave some sort of mark on the head because that tells the whole story. I also thought about getting it done european because the hole through the skull plate is pretty cool but I have been told its tough to do and not harm the velvet. Any opinions on this???

I bet that deer dropped in his tracks. The first deer I ever killed with a bow I shot in the ear hole and into the brain and he dropped like a ton of ....! That's an easy tracking job, BUT not a shot I have repeated since I was 16 years old.

Congrats on a nice Deer.

Mount the buck even if you need to buy a new cape.
The buck is a good one and MIGHT just be your best bow kill ever. He deserves a spot on your wall!

BTW; I've accidently shot them in BOTH ends with the same results.......DEAD.

I rifle shot a 5x5 bull a few years ago that had an full length xx75 (aluminum, for you youngsters) protruding straight out from his face. The arrow was bent slightly up so the bull could feed. He was healthy as a horse and the arrow didn't seem to bother him. So I guess the ole head shot doesn't always work out so well.

Great buck and thanks for sharing with us!

Nice buck. As far as a european mount, you could cut the antlers off under the burr and have them preserved. Then boil the skull clean and re-attach. You would have to check on the legalities of that, but where it's a legal kill I wouldn't think it would matter.

As far as the shot placement, if you was aiming for his head at 65 yards that's your choice, but I don't think I would mention it. If it was an accident then "stuff happens". Just my advice. Take it or leave it.

wow sweet shot... There was a debate not long ago on MM about if a shot to the head would deflect or penetrate... You proved it... debate over... Nice DEER! Oh and Mount it with the arrow.

Congrats on you buck. You might want to post pictures on here without the arrow sticking out of the skull. it's just more fuel for the anti's. Eventhought the end result is the same as a double lung shot, I think that it is just not something that needs to be seen. Just my thoughts, again congrats.

Great buck! Yeah... pull the arrow out before you take the pics? Give me a break.

Most unreal shot I have ever seen... A couple years ago I got all buck fevered on a nice 4 point and put an arrow right between his eye guards... Stuff like this definitely happens.

Glad you stuck him...!!! He'll make a great mount and a great story...!!

Better to be lucky than good any day. great example of why I don't shoot that kind of yardage...the animal can move to much...I learned my lesson the hard way. Nice buck. Congrats!!

What broadhead did you use? I am curious if it was a fixed blade or mechanical.

I'm not going to bash your shot, but it's not one that I would feel comfortable taking.

Nice buck

Well everyone thanks for the replies and not bashing me to bad with the shot. A little more of the story. We started scouting for our hunt on the weekend of July 24th. After spending one day on the unit looking around we saw a few decent bucks but not what we knew the unit was capable of producing. We decided to go back down the weekend before the hunt to spend a few days looking around and although we saw plenty of bucks they all seemed to be the same size (22"-24" 3 x 4). We headed down the night before the hunt opener due to working issues and got camp set up and all settled in for the night. Opening morning couldn't have come soon enough. At first light I found myself starring face to face with a gigantic 3 x 3 that I figured was probably around 32 to 34 wide. I was able to range the deer at 70 yards and although I feel comfortable shooting at that range I tried to cut the gap and I ended up busting him out. We spent the first few days looking for him but never found him again. We had blocked out the first nine days of the hunt and decided that we were going to hold out for the bucks we wanted. After hunting for the first 3 or 4 days we found ourselves traveling all over the unit trying to find new bucks to hunt. We started noticing that as the weather got warmer and the puddles from recent storms started to dry up the deer started moving more and more during the mornings and night. As the second weekend approached we also found ourselves getting more and more ready to be done with the hunt do to not seeing that next class of bucks that we know exist on the unit. Sunday morning approached and I was afraid that I would be heading home for a week of work but only having hunting on the mind. Well after almost sleeping in on Sunday morning I decided to roll out of bed for one more adventure and thats when I was able to get it done. I spotted this buck at first light with 7 other bucks feeding across an open meadow. With having no cover between myself and him I decided to take the shot at 65 yards. After what seemed like forever I let the arrow go and watched him drop right in his tracks. We decided to let him be for a few minutes because I was afraid to jump him in case he decided to go on a death run. About forty five minutes later I found myself holding what will probably be the buck of a lifetime for me. My bow is a Parker Blackhawk. I shot this guy with a G5 Striker 100 grain broadhead and it buried about 10 inches. I was going to post the hole through the skull but was afraid that some guys would think that "PETA would get a hold of them". Anyways thanks for the replies. We hunted last weekend trying to fill my dads tag but way to many weekend people out riding the wheelers. Maybe this weekend.

I've seen that only once before...about 15 years ago, my hunting buddy put a muzzy dead center, right between the eyes. You could not have purposely drilled and tapped it more perfectly centered.

I will not tell you guys the yardage, but I do know he would never attempt that kind of shot again.

As for deflection and penetration...the broadhead was permanently lodged into the back of the skull. The only way to get the arrow out was to unscrew it.

To this day, I've never seen anything drop dead in it's tracks quite like that deer. It was like a perfect sniper shot, even though I believe it was 99% luck.

Oh, and it was not the caliber of your buck, not that that makes him having taken the shot any better. Congrats on a great buck and a great story, and next time leave plenty of extra hide for the taxi...

LAST EDITED ON Sep-08-10 AT 03:41PM (MST)[p]I wonder what the last thing that went through that bucks head was......oh wait, the arrow! Great buck! Congrats on a fine trophy. I would get a new cape and get him mounted. If not I know a guy that does great european mounts on velvet bucks.
