Would you burn em

If you khnew you could draw a tag for the Ensign Ranch CWMU with 7 points, would youdo it?

Yelum

Absolutely. For that unit, 7 points is a bargain. I think it took 11 to draw last year. The hunt operators leave alot to be desired but it's still a great hunt. If you draw it, insist on hunting in November. The operators don't like it and will try to make you think it's not an option. They don't have a choice. Good luck.

I can't figure out how you could "know" such a thing. Do you work for SFW? ;) Ok, it's a hypothetical question, so I'd answer yes. I don't like any of the options that are guaranteed draws with 7-8 points, which is why I'm still in line for something that takes 10+. Ensign and Deseret are being seriously considered as they take 10-11.

El, I know in the draw there is no way you could know. Thats why I said "If". Many people would never put in for CWMU's because of restrictions, etc. I also know this CWMU is one of the top 3 or 4 in the state. Its a hard draw. I put in for it this past draw period with 7 points, expecting to draw a point. I was unsuccessful, and earned my 8th point. Yesterday, the DWR called and told me someone turned their tag in and I was the next alternate. So now I have to decide if its worth burning the 7 points. I was given the option of Oct 18-22 or Nov 1-5.

Just wanted to hear what thought you guys had for using your points on a good CWMU.

I have other issues that may keep me from doing the hunt, but I will wait and see how things work out.

Honestly Yelum, that is a very tough decision. I guess it really depends on what caliber of buck you are realistically hoping to take, if you would be content with 180 then go for it. The CWMU does produce some nice bucks, but from previous conversations with the operator I get the impression that you will have a guide with you at all times and odds are good that the primary purpose of that guide will be to steer you away from areas where they have seen big pre-scouted bucks. I don't think there is any chance that you would be hunting one of the better bucks on the ranch, those are ear-marked for their $22,000 clients. It sucks, but there are a lot of politics associated with CWMUs, you just have to kind of wade through the crap and try to make an educated decision.

Having hunted the CWMU in the past, I really don't know how much of a factor it is to be able to hunt that unit in November. It is primarily summer range and a lot of those bucks start to leave the ranch in late October. However, having said that, I guess that doesn't mean that a good buck couldn't wonder through there while migrating. Ask SlamPunk...he may have some insight on this as well.

Now Yelum, I don't know, but maybe you have an inside track with the operators and Rusty will pull some strings for you. If that is the case then I would say it is worth a shot. Keep in mind as well, regardless of what anyone tries to tell you, that part of the state suffered a SIGNIFICANT winter kill 3 years ago and there is no question the numbers and caliber of bucks are way down. In fact, I think the next two or three years in that quadrant of the state are going to be pretty tough by way of big mulies.

Bottomline, it depends on what caliber of buck you would be happy with. You're not going to be wading through 190s to get to the 200s that's for dang sure! But if you would be happy with a 180 class buck with a slim chance at something better then I think it would be a decent hunt for 7 pts. I personally think that by banking points for a couple more years that there are better hunts in the state that will yield better opportunities for bigger bucks. Just my two cents, take it for what it is worth.

215, I really appreciate your insight and comments. Thanks. My biggest buck went 174, so a 180 buck would be a step up, but I'm also not feeling any pressure to kill a buck. I also know I'll be extremely limited on where I can get to because I'll be hunting from a truck/wheelchair. I'll still be picky and its gonna have to be a really attractive buck if I'm gonna pull the trigger, even if I have to eat a tag. Just want to have a great experience and see some neat country with quality deer. I know the area was slammed in 07/08. That unit had a lousy 08 hunt but 09 wasn't to bad. Travis felt confident I could get a shot at a 180 buck, with a chance at something better.

Yelum, it sounds like you know Travis (the operator) and those dates don't sound terrible so I think if I were you I would go for it. Obviously it depends on what Travis says about the quality of bucks they have seen so far this year, but they should have a really good idea by now how their season should shape up. Sounds like a pretty good opportunity to me for you to better your 174 buck (which BTW is a dang nice deer anyway). Cool, let us know what you do and good luck!

Yelum;
I read your post and got thinking about my points (10) so I posted a request for info. Thanks for making me think!

Good luck on deciding what to do and keep us posted. If I had info for you I would share but I don't, sorry!

I hope you shoot a big one.

Heck ya, take the tag Larry!!! You should be able to kill a really good buck. That is one of the best CWMU's in the state and Rusty will do you right....I'm sure.

Take the tag and those later dates I say. The later dates might increase the chance of snow on the ground and the deer will be even easier to see.

You be sure someone is there videotaping too, cause I want to see you knocking down a big boy. There are a good number of bucks knocking on the 190 door up there, so it'll be fun.

I could not disagree more about Rusty doing the average public hunter right. I don't know of another CWMU operator that goes farther out of their way to give the public hunters a poor experience. It's also gotten worse in recent years. That said it is still a great place to hunt deer, and if you know the operators, maybe you will get better treatment than most. Still a great hunt for 7 points.

Call rusty, get a few assurances and take the tag for 7 points. That is a "bargain". In a few yrs that will take you 15 points

Take the tag and use it well.
