Well it was for us anyway! Last Wednesday started with a bang for my friend Tim and myself. We spotted a buck at first light that got away from us pretty quickly. We then split up with Tim going high and I went low. I spotted a big 3 point working his way along the top of a ridge and was able to get my spotting scope on him. He stopped to rub off his velvet on some oak brush. Tim was able to get within 20 yards of him, but was looking the wrong way until it was too late.
We met up and worked our way in another mile and a half and spotted a herd of bedded bucks. We knew that there was little chance of getting to them, when they jumped up out of their beds looking the opposite way from us. They then came by us and the last buck stopped. He stopped again for the last time 35 yards after my arrow hit him.
My wife and son hiked in nearly four miles to see the buck and take pictures. Having them there made an already special day, that much better! The buck was a 4x5 with eyeguards. I have always wanted a hard horned buck and a buck with an inline point. Mission accomplished.
After a long day of getting meat to the processor and the head dropped off at the taxidermist. I was getting changed for our Boy Scout meeting when my phone rang, it was Tim telling me he had taken the big three point.
He had found the buck bedded late that afternoon and waited him out. He got up and started feeding shortly before dark. Tim was able to slip within range and put him to sleep. Being a show off, his recovery was only 15 yards.
This is a day that we will never forget! Two P&Y class bucks in the same day!
