Sweet bucks. I heard they are suppose to get all the deer off the Island by this year, is that true? They grow them big out there.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-28-10 AT 09:39AM (MST)[p]those are awesome bucks just shows what little predator and hunting pressure can do that cactus buck is way cool.

That last buck scored 253 and is the second biggest buck ever taken off the island.

Yes, all the non native species are to be removed from the island. It's such a bunch of crap! They are doing the same thing on Catalina Island. Funny thing is that on Catalina they are leaving the buffalo on the island so that the tourists can see them! Santa Rosa truly is a big buck meca! Too bad it's gonna be over.

It is a shame what is going on with Santa Rosa. So many elk and deer on that island. Dont know why they cant transplant them off just as they transplanted them on it. 2011 is the last year and I know a few guys going. Might try to tag along with a camera. Great bucks!!

there is no way in hell that last deer is 250+... I dont even see 230+. Unless there is alot of trash you cant see I just dont see it

What does it take to hunt on the island? Is there a drawing or is it just very costly?

Josh

Hey hornkiller, sorry about that I didn't see the scores posted above each picture. Yes that is the scores for the bottom buck. Got it straight from the guide who has been scoring for years. There is no drawing.

That whole deal with that island is such a shame. Would have been nice to take those animals and released them in some areas that needed a recharge in new genes, or have them released in an area that might have had a die off recently. Im sure the same people that want these animals "exterminated" are also against hunting. Glad to see these trophies, but isnt comforting knowing that they will ALL be gone in a short time.

the real crime of that island is the act of congress that took it from the previous owners....

It is very costly....I know about 8 years ago, my boss paid $8,000 to hunt deer. My guess is that it has more than doubled as the years dwindle away. There is no draw but there's always been a long waiting list. I'd much rather spend the money to go there than Mexico. I've never been to either but I've hunted Catalina twice and there's something pretty cool about hunting on an island.

I think I read that the deer on those Islands came from the Kaibab Forest, that they transported the deer back in the 40's. Is that true?

Both the deer and elk on the island are descendents of Kaibab animals, transplanted in the 40's.

They have done well, to say the least. Predators, disease, adverse climate conditions and road kill, are non existant issues.

There have been some SERIOUS animals taken off the island and there are still some HUGH trophy critters left there. I have been on the island 2 times...(field trips).

I have a friend who hunted it last year and the deer cost him $11k....the management let him take a spike elk as a bonus, due to the fact that they were all going to be gone after this year.

Some hunters have reported seeing 15 or more 30" deer, in one day.

I don't have all the facts, but it is my understanding that what is left will simply be slaughtered in January and the island will be cleared of ANYTHING alive that was/is not "pre-European"....that's the nature faker term for restoration of our wildlands.

Seems there is a little bush, about 4" high that all the ungulates feed on or trample.....

The cost to kill all the animals on the island is very high, helicopters, herders, government paid shooters, etc.

The alternative methods costs could be very low, by comparison, but youth hunts, disabled Vet hunts, auction tags and relocation alternatives have all been rejected by your, ever so "friendly and frugal" government.

It is simply disgusting.

the fed is officially hijacked by enviros. no logging is allowed because it "destroys" the forest, but anything the beetle kills is a miraculous part of the cycle of life.

we are all sinners for driving cars and polluting the air, but the forest service can do controled burns all summer long because the cycle of life is so wonderful. (Haven't had a breath of fresh air in over 2 mos. in Central Utah.)

great photos. thanks for sharing

I think it would be cool if they put then on the Cache unit. It can use a boost. They would freeze to death in the winter though so maybe the AZ strip would be better suited for them.

The bucks are from the Kaibab but I am pretty sure the elk are Roosies not sure from where though.

Its a shame they should open it to a youth draw or something and let the kids kill em all if they gotta go.
