Im heading up for opening on 102 in wy and wondering what i should shoot,Is a 150 class 4 point normal?I was thinking of taking the first 165 class buck i see.But just wanted to ask what is a good buck for that area.Score doesnt really matter and if i can find something with character other than a strait 4 by 4 im goin to let some lead fly.Any suggestions?Any spots to try?I have hunted it in the past but any help will be appreciated.I will post my story after and if i shoot one.Im goin up for weekend then hunting for last week.So i just need to know what i need to pass on.if i see a buck i like i will shoot him,but what is the norm people end up shooting up there? Thanks elknr.

Most people won't shoot a "big" buck in that area. You will see a lot of deer, many that would tempt most. You will see a lot of bucks in the 150 class. If you'll be happy with your stated goal, that is definitely attainable. My experience with the bigger bucks in the area is that they tend to shut down during the hunt, moving very little during the daylight hours.

If you find a 165 class buck take it!. This is not a trophy unit. Not to say there are not some big bucks taken. There are lots of 18 to 23 inch bucks with bad genitics. I have been up in that unit for about two months now antelope and deer hunting. In my opinion the 320 plus tags a year have really contibuted to the poor quality of this unit. One good thing is that most of the residents are happy with small two and three points, as this is what a saw several of them take.

Great response Denali . As a resident I know I would shoot the first small 2 or 3 point I saw because I know I can get the tag in another 10+ years. I do agree that if your looking for a perfect typical that the genetics aren't the best Wyoming has to offer but it does produce some stellar bucks, let a 165 walk if you work for it you'll find better.

After spending over two month's covering the most productive areas, I would say that it is a "Great Response!" Not to mention talking to 50 plus guys everyone else had the same opinion as I did. When is the last time you hunted the unit?? Like I said I saw several Guys with Wyoming plates loading small 2x3's that seemed as happy as could be. The biologist confirmed that most of the residents are happy with this caliber of deer. I'm just giving everyone the facts, so you don't need to be a smartass! Take that 165 buck; you might not see another one!
